Make sure Thunderbird is set as the default email program & MAPI handler
(1) In Thunderbird, "Tools Options Advanced General".
click "Check Now".
(2) In Windows 7,
open "Default Program", "set your default programs",
select Thunderbird from the list,
click "Choose Defaults for this Program",
and make sure that MAPI - Send Mail is check-marked.

Had already done all that before posting here. :o(
A guess: MS-word uses a specific API for Windows Mail which does not work
for Thunderbird???

(3) Have you also tried the troubleshooting tips on this page?
http://kb.mozillazine.org/MAPI_Support#Troubleshooting
(4) Also check that the Thunderbird's mozMAPI DLL was also updated
when you last updated Thunderbird. Some application software
locks the default mail client's MAPI DLL so it cannot be updated.
4.1 Registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail\Mozilla Thunderbird
Look for the value of DLLPath, it will be a file
named something like
 C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\mozMapi<<OTHERSTUFF>>.dll
4.2 Now check that this file exists and has the same date
as thunderbird.exe
(5) Check the registry setting for your "default mail client".
This determines which mail client's "DLLPath" will be used
in (4) above.
In Windows 7, go to the registry key
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Clients\Mail
and look for the value of the (default) string.
It should be "Mozilla Thunderbird" exactly.

That all seems fine as far as I can see.
If I change the default to Seamonkey that works perfectly, but when I
change back it doesn't. Same with Outlook.
So the "Swap.exe" test (bullet #5) worked with Thunderbird, did it?
> If I change the default to Seamonkey that works perfectly, but when I

Here, I have had no such problem with Thunderbird 3.0.4. If I send a
file from within Wordpad, Thunderbird opens a new composition window
with the file in the attachments box.
If you find it works when the default is Seamonkey or Outlook but not
when the default is Thunderbird, then... One of the things which this
suggests is that there might be a problem with Thunderbird's file
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\mozMapi<<OTHERSTUFF>>.dll
When the default is Seamonkey or Outlook, other .dll files in different
locations are used instead.
Here, with Thunderbird 3.0.4, the file
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird\mozMapi<<OTHERSTUFF>>.dll
has the following attributes and details:
Size: ............. 1,650 bytes
File version: ..... 0.8.0.0
Product version: ... 1.9.1.9
(6) Try it while Thunderbird is running.
Now close Thunderbird, start Thunderbird again but
in Thunderbird's "Safe Mode", then try again while
Thunderbird is running in "Safe Mode".
If it works in "Safe Mode" and only in "Safe Mode",
this suggests that one of your extensions is causing
the problem.
(7) Open Thunderbird's config editor:
Tools Options Advanced General
find all preferences with mapi as one of the parts of
the preference name (by default there is only one
such preference), and reset the preference to default
(right-click -> reset). Does this fix it?

Well I did, but it wouldn't let me log on - error 3 - it also opened Tbird
at the last page I was on - which is usually what it does.

I have no trouble with Wordpad OR MS publisher

No better in Safe Mode

All I have here is mapi.blind-send.enabled default boolean true
It's beginning to look as if the problem is to do with the Word-Tbird
connection.

This is important information. MAPI must already be working with
Thunderbird if you can send from these applications. This eliminates
the need to do many of the tests.

Your size looks correct.
The size should be 49,840 bytes - I must have copied and pasted the
wrong size into my last message.

Indeed so.
Perhaps Word is using some specific feature which Thunderbird does not
support, as Herman Viaene suggested in this thread.
If it worked from Word to Outlook but neither to Thunderbird nor to
Seamonkey, I would guess that Word was using ExtendedMAPI (see the
third bullet point under "Troubleshooting" at
"http://kb.mozillazine.org/MAPI_Support#Troubleshooting").

Yes it does work from Word to Seamonkey!
