Hello
In my Thunderbird 2.0.0.23 sometimes appears empty mails dated 1970-01-01. I
can only delete them by rebuilding folder index. I created new profile but
problem stayed.
Could someone help.
Best regards

That is the date most Unix systems use as a starting point to count

OP didn't mention an operating system but I'd guess Mac or linux - IIRC
Java also.

Try checking your cmos battery - might be dead/dying.
Macs once had some kind of bug when they went to sleep which caused this
but I don't have a Mac.

Same problem here, under WinXP SP2, TB 2.0.0.23 (20090812).
All these blank mails appear in my Junk folder.

Any idea?

Have you tried View/Message Source to see if there is actually any content?

Hi, I have the same problem. WinXP SP3, Thunderbird 2.0.0.23, Swedish.

I tried looking at the source of the email but it is completely blank.

Sometimes spammers send blank messages, because of some error in their
scripts. No headers, no body.

If Date -header is missing from the mail, it is possible that TB
defaults to time_t value of 0. That means "1970-01-01 01:00" in C
language library, where time_t represents milliseconds after "1970-01-01
01:00".

It was a blank message, that happens. Another possibility is malfunction
or misconfiguration in some email server on the route. Happens too.

Sometimes spammers send blank messages to see if they don't get a
bounce, and thusly verify the address is valid. Expect more spam
shortly. :-)

Isn't SMTP VRFY command valid any more? That should be more simple. Or
is it no more supported by some servers?

I don't know. Maybe someone else has that answer.

I have a similar problem, except it shows as 12/01/1969, and it was
happening in newsgroup folders as well. After much research, the only
thing I could find was someone saying to make sure your folders are
compacted, especially large ones with a lot of files in them. I tried
it, and it did seem to help, though I still get the occasional, blank,
outdated e-mail. For that, I made a delete filter to automatically
delete any mail that is older than 1999. I now do not see any such e-
mails, although when checking my filter log, I can see they're still
coming through every now and then.

If you don't compact folders regularly or set Tb to do it automatically
in background mail files can become corrupted and behave in that strange
way. A very basic symptom is source of those strange mails are
completely blank.

You can do following.

Close Tb.
Backup Tb profile folder.
Start Tb.
Select name of mail account. Goto File menu and select 'Compact folders'.
it will compact all folders under that account.
Do same for other mail accounts.
Restart Tb.

Not true. It is Outlook express that does that. A waste of time for
Thunderbird.
You merely do it manually from the file menu or let thunderbird do it by
following
the directions from Mozilla which are found here;
