If IMAP is supposed to give you nearly instant notification when you get a new email, why doesn't it always work?

So, it's bugged for the past few months that I am not getting the
notifications of getting new mail on my IMAP accounts even though I do
have set the option "Allow Immediate Server Notifications when new
messages arrive" enabled. Typically, I have to set "Check for new
messages" for, in my case, 5 minutes. It used to work fine without that
option enabled. Anything I should check to figure out why it's not
working right?

To get "instant" notification, the client and server both need to
support IDLE (or PUSH but not sure how widely implemented that is) what
server is it?

Both are GMail.

Gmail does support IDLE, but aren't you using thunderbird?

Update to 52.0b3, released today. Try safe mode.

I haven't noticed any problem with my IMAP account.

Do you have any gmail (not Thunderbird) filters set up?

Oh, I wondered when you said "both" whether you meant client and server
are gmail, do you mean you're using two gmail accounts?
