Using Thunderbird 60.3.1, 64-bit.

Is it possible to add Google and make it as the default search engine?
(The search engine under Options -> General -> Default Search Engine)

When possible, I would like to avoid installing yet another add-on...

Is Google the default in your browser?

It's called an "opinion" because it's not a fact.

Then TB should show Google as one of the options. I'm surprised it
doesn't. Which unfortunately implies that I don't how to fix that issue.

Sorry I can't help.

When you hit a HTML link in Thunderbird, it should launch your Window$'
default browser. I always think that the "Default Search Engine" in
Thunderbird had no use. :)

Anyway, Google keywords for you:

Oh well, this is a better answer:

How to make Thunderbird NOT use Bing as search engine?

BUT "Google Search for Thunderbird" is not yet compatible with

I suggest you use Firefox as your browser and use Thunderbird only for
E-mail, RSS feeds, and newsgroups. In that case, Thunderbird does not
need a search engine.

Once again, there has been a mass shooting. This time,
it was in Thousand Oaks, California. And once again, just
as he did after the recent mass shooting in Pittsburgh,
President Trump sent his thoughts and prayers to the
families of the victims. Thoughts and prayers will not
stop the carnage. Action is needed on gun control, and
more guns -- as Trump proposed for Pittsburgh and Parkland
in Florida -- is not the answer.

I'm not sure there is.
I've read that it might be possible to add Google using the instructions
in the following article in Thunderbird 52, then when you update
Thunderbird, Google will might remain in the search engine list:
<https://support.mozilla.org/kb/add-search-engine-open-search>

I haven't tested it!

Hi David,
Thunderbird no longer opens searches in a Thunderbird tab; it just opens
the search URL to your default browser.

I think the different country builds of TB have different lists of
search engines, and different defaults too, but I didn't think the
choice in FF affected what was available within TB.

AFAIK, the default browsers choice is system-wide, because opening a
link from a PDF, for example, starts FF. Also, IE has the same option. I
assume all browsers have it.

But the point about country builds is worth pursuing, I think.

I don't think the browser comes into the equation? From within TB if I
highlight part of a message and right click, in the context menu I get
the option

search google for "whatever"

or if i have selected Bing as TB's default search engine, I get

search bing for "whatever"

The search engines defined for a UK build of TB seem to be

Google, Bing, Amazon uk, AOL search UK, Twitter search, Wikipedia EN,
Yahoo! UK

Well, if you select a different one for TB, that should be the one TB
uses....

:-)

You can add other search engines. Eg, I've added duckduckgo.

Best,

Which is why I initially commented, because you seemed to be telling the
O/P that thunderbird should use the search engine that was configured in
firefox ...

Can you elaborate how you did this? The tricks I have used in the past
seem to have stopped working.

Yes, that's what I thought should happen. My error, TB has its own list
of search engines. No simple option to change.

I've just changed the default in config.editor, we'll see if that worked.

I can only say that on my system Google is default in FF but in TB it is
not offered. I found that quite surprising but, upon thinking some more, I
realized that I had probably never in years of using TB done a search from
it. I can't even think of a reason why one might want to do so.

See: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/open-search

I would very much like to use DuckDuckGo (if ever I did choose to search
from within Thunderbird!) and have tried to implement the xml file they
offer. However it refuses to appear as an option in recent versions of
Thunderbird. And yes, I have removed the relevant json file too. :-(

changed the two settings with .defaultenginename.

But it didn't work.

Bummer. :-(

The method that deletes the mozlz4 file works in TB 52, but not in 60. Works with Google, DuckDuckGo, Startpage etc.
