How does Thunderbird 3.x establish the default printer on Ubuntu using a
CUPS printing service?

Thunderbird appears to ignore both the MOZ_PRINTER_NAME variable and the
CUPS default.

That is, I can set and export the MOZ_PRINTER_NAME variable to say
"epson", then run Thunderbird and Thunderbird's print dialog still
defaults to the last printer I printed from.

I can also change the CUPS default printer to epson (both globally and
for that user) and the Thundbird rpint dialog still defaults to the last
printer I printed from.

Is there ANY mechanism for having the print dialog default to a given
printer (eg "epson")?

Thanks

have a look at;

http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config_entries

where you will find at;

http://kb.mozillazine.org/About:config_entries#Print.

where you will see 3rd and 4th down are;

print. postscript.enabled
Boolean
True (default): Enable the the Postscript printing system
on Linux, Unix, or VMS.
False: Disable the system.

print. postscript.cups.enabled
Boolean
True (default): Enable CUPS support within the Postscript
printing system.
False: Do not try to access CUPS.

if you do not have above preference names in your "about:config", add them.

to mess up an ms windows box, you just need to *look* at it.

The installation instructions stated to install Windows 2000 or better.
So I installed Linux.
