Strange. Might be an extension or else a Vista issue. I'm using XP Home
SP3 with TB3.0.1 and don't have that problem.

I had that problem also, but after a reboot, it went away!
Now the Message Pane stays off when Tb is launched.

As per the bug report (see wayne's post), this occurs when the trash
folder is emptied just before closing previous session.

I've seen this in a slightly different way since TB3. Every time TB
crashes (not often though), upon restart the message pane is visible and
has to be switched off manually.

I have found that the preview pane returns any time TB sees ANY kind of
error, either in closing, or even a failed attempt to contact a server.
Rather annoying for one who NEVER uses the preview pane (pain).

I did not know that Thunderbird had a preview pane. Where do I find it?
All I have is a message pane.

use it because it kinda reminds me of trying to read something through a
board fence. Not tall enough, and too much scrolling to make it useful,
and not wide enough either. I like the features of a full message
window obtained by double-clicking a message header.
If you wonder why it is called a preview pane, look at the options under
advanced/ reading and display. It allows you to set a time for this
'preview' to not cause the message to be marked read.

Nope. That is the message pane. It has been called the message pane as
long as I have been using Thunderbird. See

That is your choice. Just don't refer to it by an incorrect name.

Nowhere in that option does it refer to a "preview pane". You can set to
delay marking as read but it doesn't matter whether you use the three
pane mode or use a separate message window.

Your denomination is correct. Outlook Express always referred to its
similar pane as a "Preview Pane", and the name has stuck. TB has
preferred "Message Pane", since, in both applications actually, the
message is opened whether in the pane or its own window.
We are really splitting semantic airs here though, are we not? There are
more important things to get on to.

If 90% of the users of mail/news readers call it a 'preview pane', I
will go with that. You can call it a 'message pane', as opposed to a
'message window', to avoid confusion, and I am perfectly comfortable
with that, if it makes you happy.
In either case, it works differently from a message window, and I never
use the painful message/preview pane. It has a singular disadvantage in
that it displays a message upon selection of the message header, rather
than waiting for the user to click on it again. There are situations
where I don't WANT to display a message, but rather to just delete, or
move it, and not have to wait for it to be displayed, or don't WANT to
see it at all.
