I have a maildir repository (not mbox), so I never do searches in TBird
and I don't need or want global-messages-db.sqlite. It's 503 M-bytes.

I know I can delete the 'global-messages-db.sqlite' file and it will
automatically be rebuilt. My question is: How can I permanently remove
the search function (and therefore avoid 'global-messages-db.sqlite'
altogether)?

Thanks!
Mark.

Terminate Thunderbird. Delete the file. Using the touch command,
create a new global-messages-db.sqlite. Change the permissions to
"read-only". Resume normal operations.

Consider:
* Most state mandate that drivers have liability insurance.
* Employers are mandated to have worker's compensation insurance.
* If you live in a flood zone, flood insurance is mandatory.
* If your home has a mortgage, fire insurance is mandatory.

Why then is mandatory health insurance so bad??

Tools/Options/Advanced/General/Advanced Configuration, uncheck 'Enable
Global Search and Indexer'.

Do not do this. Just disable global search as Steve suggests. To repeat,
that's:
