Is there a simple way to disable all of the filters for a given account?

Thanks.

Go to Manage message filters and remove the check marks under Enabled in
the list?

Select the Account in the Folder Pane, Manage message filters is under
Advanced Features. Menu button > Message Filters also works.

What I would like to do is disable all of the filters in an account with
one or two clicks, not one per filter.

Thanks.

Terminate Thunderbird.

In your profile, locate the folder for the account. For a mail account
that folder will be a subfolder in the folder named Mail. For a
newsgroup account, that folder will be a subfolder in the folder named
News.

Locate the file named msgFilterRules.dat. Rename it to
x-msgFilterRules.dat-x. That eliminates all filters in that account.
When you open that account, an empty file msgFilterRules.dat will be
created.

When you want resto9re your old filters, terminate Thunderbird. Delete
the file msgFilterRules.dat. Rename x-msgFilterRules.dat-x back to
msgFilterRules.dat.

Remember, the renaming of the file of filters needs to be done when
Thunderbird is terminated.

Unfortunately, some filter processing will still occur. If any of the
filters use customized headers, that processing will be quite slow even
if the filters are disabled. See bug #622484 at
<https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=622484>. My suggestion to
rename the file of filters mitigates that problem.

Doesn't that involve more than one or two clicks along with some typing.

I could write a couple of scripts. :-)

Well, with email I need separate filters for filtering the Inbox to
other folders. Several clicks to disable all filters.

With this newsgroup server only one filter account wide to filter many
different messages to "Mark as Read" and "Delete". Three clicks to
disable the filter. Four if I close the Message Filters window.

So, it depends on the use case.

Yes. However, I know of no "one or two clicks" method. As I indicated
elsewhere in this thread, even disabled filters are processed if there
are any custom headers in the filters. My method ensures that there is
no processing of disabled filters.

"Custom headers"? What are they?

David E. Ross

When you create or edit a filter and you select the header pull-down
list (under the "Match all of the following" radio button), you get a
standard list of about five headers. Below that list, there is an
option for "Customize" with which you can indicate other headers (e.g.,
User-Agent, Injection-Info, NNTP-Posting-Host).

When you create a custom header for a filter, you must use the exact
character string that you would see in the message source. Thus,
"User-Agent" is valid while "User agent string" is not valid.

there is an easier way to disable filters and can be done without
leaving thunderbird.

create a top filter with selections;

(*) Match all messages

Preform these actions:
Move messages to [your desired destination folder]

to make rest of filters active, disable the filter.

to make rest of filters inactive, enable the filter.

I see. That moves the messages out if the inbox so that the other
filters fail (but are not disabled).

But now I have a bunch of messages that are not where I want them!!!

Most likely OP wants incoming messages still to be delivered in
his Inbox, but without filtering. Then the action to perform is
"Stop filter execution".

Untested, but how about create the filter, but with the only action
being 'Stop Filter Execution'?

I do believe that will prevent any other filters from executing when it
is enabled (and first in line/at the top)...

Tanstaafl & Piet B,

yes, "Stop filter execution" does work.

i had not noticed that selection because i move emails to my
"Local Folder" Inbox.

i am at a loss as to what op means by his comment of;

"But now I have a bunch of messages that are not where I want them!!!"

i guess we will have to wait to see if he post as to where his emails
are going that he does not want them to. ;-)

He meant that if he did it the way you suggested - ie, set the filter
action to Move the messages to some other folder - the messages wouldn't
be in the Inbox where he wants them.

In other words, he didn't want to move them or (apparently) do anything
else to them, which is why I suggested just 'Stop filter execution'...

Really? I have a bunch of filters set up to move messages to various
folders. The "Match all messages" will move ALL messages from my Inbox
to a "desired destination folder". But that folder is not where I want
those messages to end up eventually. I want each to be in the folder
that it would have been in had I not used "Match all messages".

Capisce?

Which misses the point... he did not want this filter to move them to
ANY folder, he has numerous other filters that do that.

He simply wanted an easy way to disable all filters for any given
account. I think he now has that solution (hopefully he'll confirm that
it works as I didn't test it)...

Maybe newsgroups are treated differently...

I don't use them anymore, but, you can have multiple newsgroups all
under one server (ie, many even dozens of mozilla newsgroups) - so, if
that is the common denominator, then presumably a filter for one
newsgroup will affect all newsgroups for the one newsgroup server?

Can't test to confirm though since I don't use them any more...

You can set filters by server, or by group.
