If I hit ENTER when I have selected a message that's in a thread, the
message is opened, but the thread is closed. That is, Next takes me to
the next thread rather than to the next message in the current thread.

1) Is that bug?

2) Is there a keyboard shortcut that will do what I want?

Thanks.

good fortune to run into the ones that I do, and the eyesight to tell

Here are a few keyboard shortcuts which I constantly use (in Threaded view).
You may find the n key particularly useful.

* expand all threads in current folder/newsgroup
\ collapse all threads in current folder/newsgroup
Ctrl-o open current message, don't change thread expanded/collapsed status
n next unread (even if within collapsed thread or [with confirmation]
in different folder or newsgroup)
p previous unread (this one and the previous are not symmetrical)
f forward (unread or not)
b backward (ditto)
m toggle read/unread status of message
r mark thread as read
Ctrl-Shift-t
get all mail
Ctrl-w close current window
Ctrl-q exit Thunderbird

On thread root:
Left collapse thread
Right expand thread
Enter toggle thread expand/collapse status and open message

On message which is not a thread root:
Left go to parent in thread
Right go to to first child in thread (if any)
Enter open message

Best regards,
Tony.

A novel approach is to remove all power from the system, which
removes most system overhead so that resources can be fully devoted to
doing nothing. Benchmarks on this technique are promising; tremendous
amounts of nothing can be produced in this manner. Certain hardware
limitations can limit the speed of this method, especially in the
larger systems which require a more involved & less efficient
power-down sequence.
An alternate approach is to pull the main breaker for the
building, which seems to provide even more nothing, but in truth has
bugs in it, since it usually inhibits the systems which keep the beer
cool.

I must not have been clear. I would like to move to the next message
when I have a message open for reading.

The down-arrow key works if the focus is on the message header in the
header pane. If the focus is on the message pane, then the down-arrow
causes scrolling of the message.

I don't use the message pane at all, David, but thanks anyway.

The message window then.

As you told me (Bingo!) privately, the n key is useful.
