Sometimes when I open T'bird inbox new messages either show
immediately upon opening and then disappear (not in Junk or Trash), or
they don't show up at all in T'bird Inbox even though I can see them
in inbox of my work email system. Browsing discussion groups suggests
that I'm not the only one to experience this problem, but I haven't
come across a workable solution.

Thanks.

I've no suggestions, just confirming I've had the same issue occasionally.

Just a thought.....

While in the Inbox: View | Sort By. Make sure "Threaded" is not checked
and "Unthreaded" is.

I find the *View|Messages|All* setting sometimes reveals messages if you
change it. Try some of the custom views such as "Recent". Since I
created a "Custom All" category (which selects all messages whose
subjects don't contain AnArbitraryLongAndMeaningLessString), I haven't
had this problem.

repairing the folder didn't fix it.

But going to View/Message and clicking 'all' did. Seems it was happily hiding emails that I had previously read on my blackberry and then downloaded.

Nice default setting guys!
