Thunderbird keeps asking me for the username and password to use for a
usenet account... this has been an ongoing problem for *years*,
literally. I've searched back through the archives, and there are
plenty of people citing the same problem, but never any fixes (that I
can find). I'm getting dang tired of coming home to find Thunderbird
locked up with a couple dozen pop-up windows open asking for my
username and password that somehow got deleted from the saved info.

As mentioned, this has been a problem for *years*... other bugs have
gotten fixed, why not this one?

Probably because it isn't something wrong with the program, but in
someone's computer. In all the years I have been dealing with Mozilla
software, starting with Netscape 1.2, I haven't encountered it.
My best advice is to create a new profile, and start TB in 'safe mode'
from the start menu, and see if the problem comes up again. Another
suggestion is to NOT leave TB running unattended, although my wife often
does when we go on vacation so her mailbox doesn't fill up. Never been
a problem.

Assuming that you have saved your usenet server userid and password
information in Tbird ("remember" checkbox), two possible causes for what
you are describing are:

1) usenet server times out an existing connection and forces
authentication to re-open a session on the affected connection

2) something causes additional connections to be established to the
usenet server beyond the initial connection, thereby forcing additional
authentication requests

Long, idle, sessions are subject to disconnect/termination by the TCP/IP
stack and/or the remote "application stack".

Hmmm... I've had the same problem pop up on my last three computers
that I can recall for sure... Win XP, Mac OSX 10.4, and now Vista. A
cursory search through the archives on Google Groups shows that its
not just me and my computers. I've been running Netscape/Mozilla
nearly as long as you have; this has always been a TB problem for me.

I may try that... the odd thing is that its not something that happens
right away. Typically I'll set up the usenet account and select the
various groups that I want to subcribe to, and then anywhere from a
couple days to a week or two later it starts asking for username and
passwd for the account when it is supposed to go on and automatically
check for new messages - the fields are always blank, because its
apparently *not* retaining the data like its supposed to.

Do you suggest I don't run TB in the background while surfing the
web? Same thing happens then. I appreciate the sentiment, but thats
a bandaid, not a solution. I think most people would agree that a
mail/news client that can't be left open because it can't remember
certain account username/password information is less than useful.

Thanks,

Monte

Good call re: session timeout

This used to be of major concern way back when .. when we subcribed to
the UUNET feeds and paid via the number of allowed connections. If we
subscribed to 10 connections and you were number 11 then you got an
error. If you were number 10 and your session timeout out, usually 1500
seconds (default) then you became number 11 .. :-)

I had this problem with Verizon. While it may or may not apply to your
situation, I got rid of it by going to Tools/Account Settings/Server
Settings/Use Secure Connection and changing their default checkoff to
"Never".

Having trouble with Mozilla NGs tonight. Sorry about these duplicate
(triplicate?) posts.

I have had TB ask for a user name and password repeatedly when the mail
server (remote mail server) limits are reached. This is a result of the
remote mail server refusing to allow access to a full account. Another
way this happens is if you exceed 1 or 2 GB of file size on your LOCAL
computer. TB doesn't like mailbox files bigger than 1 or 2 GB.

So...

1) Check to see if the remote server is full.
2) Check to see if the local files are bigger than 1 or 2 GB.
