I finally bit the bullet and updated from 68 to 78. The process went
fairly smoothly and I was pleasantly surprised. I'd been holding off
until updates or alternatives to the extensions I use came about. They
did, so I proceeded.

Noticed a new "DevTools" button which I'm unable to remove from the
taskbar. When I clicked on it, it opened but an error message window
also did. It says:

"An incoming request to permit remote debugging connection was detected.
A remote client can take complete control over your browser!"

and asked if I wanted to disable the connection. I did so, and now
DevTools (I presume the "Developer Toolbox") won't even open!

Can anybody tell me how to fix these two problems?

TIA

PS. Is there any way to disable that damned Calendar? I will never use
it and all it does is add clutter to the program window. It should be an
option, and many people agree with me about this too.

Also on that message was the following:

Client Endpoint: 127.0.0.1:49168
Server Endpoint: 127.0.0.1:49165

so both endpoints were local. I just clicked the "Okay" button under
"Allow connection?" and then the Developer Toolbox opened normally.

I was able to fix this in about:config. I forget which preference it was
though, sorry. Since there were only about four that had been modified
once I filtered on "devtools", it was easy to figure out which one it was.

The built in calendar is nice for people who use such a thing, but I
have a dedicated program on my system which I use instead. It would be
nice to be able to disable the Thunderbird calendar. Anybody know how to
do that?

TIA.

With 'Mail Toolbar' engaged... click the hamburger/three bars... then
Customize... then 'Toolbar Layout'... and drag 'Calendar' off the
toolbar.

Happy to hear you got that resolved. Maybe you setup remote debugging in
a previous version. It is not enabled by default.

The calendar tab opens and has an enabled Home calendar?

You see "Events and Tasks" in the Menu bar or button?

You have a Calendar section in Options?

Right-click on the Home calendar, select Properties and remove the check
mark for "Enable this calendar".

That should hide the "Calendar" section in Preferences, remove the
Events and Tasks menu items and the Today Pane icon in the status bar.

Someone else suggested removing the icons from the Tab bar using
Customize. The problem with that is the customize widget already has
those icons in it that method doesn't work.

I believe you need the Message Header Toolbar Customize extension, which
adds a "Customize Calendar Buttons" item to the right-click context menu.

Dev tools is on the menu. Can you get to it there?

Thanks, but I've already done that. What remains is in the extreme lower
right corner of the program window, labeled "Today pane" as well as menu
items under "Events and Tasks". I would like to be able to get rid of
both of them.

Earlier today, I got an email from my dentist's office reminding me of a
cleaning appointment. As always, it had an attached file with the
extension ".ics" An ICS file is a calendar file saved in a universal
calendar format used by several email and calendar programs, including
Microsoft Outlook, Google Calendar, and Apple Calendar.

A green bar appeared at the top of the email asking me if I wanted to
accept, cancel or some other option. I clicked on "accept", and an email
was automatically sent in reply. Then I started thinking, /what if that
appointment was added to TB's calendar? Who was asking me if I wanted to
decline or accept the appointment? Was it the email itself or was it
TB's calendar?/ I looked at the calendar, and sure enough- there was the
appointment, listed on the day it was scheduled.

I was furious!! I do NOT want TB maintaining a schedule of personal
events for me, and especially not automatically!

I deleted the item from the calendar and then was asked if I wanted to
send an email to the dentist's office telling them that I declined the
appointment. I told it *NO!*, then to make sure it didn't do something
that would make the dentist's office think that I had canceled the
appointment, I sent them a separate email reply saying simply, "I'll be
there!"

*THIS* is a perfect example of why I want to know how to disable TB's
built in calendar. My schedule is my business alone and I NEVER keep it
on my computer.

Thanks very much for that tip too. That's a great extension. Very helpful.

I'm a happy camper now!

Thanks for replying Big Al, but I've now taken care of the problem.
Whenever I open DevTools, it seems unnecessary for me to be warned about
a remote connection that's actually a local one, but I can live with it.
Maybe I need to file a bug report.

Win 10 TB 78.7.1... Options + Calendar... "Home calendar"? I see
nuffink matching that, and certainly not anything right-clickable
which launches 'Properties' with an opportunity to enter or remove a
check mark.

Nobody's version allows for 'Customize' to add Calendar back into the
'Mail Toolbar'... and remove again. Maybe my profile preference is so
olde that the 'Calendar' icon never got doubled up, i.e. on both the
toolbar and in 'Customize'

Well, you obviously have a calendar if you have Calendar in Options.

I should have beed a little clearer.

In the Calendar tab (the one with the dates), select the Home calendar
from the Calendar list, right-click, select Properties from the context
menu, remove the check mark.

Pass that information along to Jim, since he doesn't appear to be
reading my posts, and I don't see his posts.

(maybe I'll create a profile for newsgroups only and see if that works)

Clicking accept adds the item to your calendar in Thunderbird and sends
a response to the sender that you accepted the appointment.

If you are using an IMAP account it also places the item in your
calendar on the web for that account.

The default Home calendar in Thunderbird is stored only on the computer
and I don't see the problem with that unless you are sharing the
application with other users.

Hope you don't forget the appointment.

Ah, but for me that's not accessed through 'Tools = Options', but by
actually opening a Calendar from the Mail Toolbar, be it the default
Home or otherwise, then unclicking. The Options portion from Tools is
simply to set up the parameters of that Home calendar.

But unclicking in Properties doesn't 'remove' the module... it simply
hides it as with removing the icon from the Mail Toolbar etc., etc.

Semantics maybe but....

Cancel that.

I see his posts in my TB Daily and a test profile with this version.
