Running 3.1.15 under Win7 home premium 64 bit. TBird accesses 2 Gmail
accounts, 2 Live accounts, 2 Comcast accounts, and 2 Hotmail accounts.
I keep getting the random error message "An error occurred during a
connection to pop3.live.com:995. security library failure. (Error code
sec_error_library_failure). Doesn't seem to happen every time the
client attempts to connect to the servers, it's quit random. Any ideas
what might be the problem? I assume this could be the client or the server.

TIA

I see there's already a thread on this (I looked before posting, not
sure how I missed the other thread). I'm checking that thread now,
seems like I'm not the only one having this trouble

My guess is it's a Windows issue, probably caused by Live; and/or the
result of having so many different e-mail providers. If I were you, I'd
use only two: Comcast, and one other. FWIW, we here have used only our
ISP's e-mail service, and have never encountered this problem, or any
others that also seem Windows Live related.

..or perhaps only by people using Hotmail (live.com)?

Why would you say that? (so many email providers) I have currently 17
addresses from five different sources - including gmail but not hotmail -
and Thunderbird (3.1.15) handles it all very well.

From the sparse info given, I too would say it's a hotmail issue, not a
Thunderbird issue.

The other day I reported that with 2 hotmail accounts I wasn't
seeing this message. It started occuring this am. Since I
haven't made any changes in either Thunderbird (7.0.1) or the
accounts, I'm assuming it's a Live.com generated problem.

I've been using TBird w/multiple addresses/servers for years without
this problem. What seems odd too is that my client is set to check for
new messages every 10 minutes, and the error only occurs a few times/day.

Hasn't happened yet today. I think it's a the server level, maybe it's
fixed.

Thanks for the replies.

Spoke too soon, happened again. What I really hate about it is it makes
that &%#@#%*&!!!! Win 7 taskbar "pop up". Like it needed another excuse
for that infuriating behavior.

Most annoying OS since ME.

What? I find the taskbar indispensible. It's amazing what bothers one
person is what makes software great for another.

Erm, your newsreader is Pan, so I infer you're running on Linux, not
Windows. So....

Erm, so? Yes, I use Linux (and Thunderbird for email), but what does
that have to do with using a live.com Hotmail address? Are you inferring
that only Windows OS users can have a Hotmail account? My wife uses a
Hotmail account every day - on this Linux computer.

Or are you trying to say that Linux Thunderbird is better than Windows
Thunderbird?

Hey, pour something cooling over or into you, OK? I said "My guess is
it's a Windows issue, probably caused by Live". The subsequent reference
to having possibly too many e-mail providers is obviously intended to be
read as "in a Windows context". I also said it was a _guess_, ie, I
don't claim Absolute Truth. I have enough experience with Windows to
know that mysterious glitches happen even on the best-maintained
systems. And just as mysteriously disappear. So why are you getting your
knickers in a twist?

BTW, my Linux machine is not glitch free. I'll be posting a request for
help on the alt...ubuntu group later today.

Have a good day,
Wolf K.

Just so ya know, my knickers aren't twisted, nor do I need a cooling!

I was merely disputing your statement that one should not use more than
two email servers/ISPs, and that Linux/Windows had anything to do with
it. I also used at least five mail servers back when I was a Windows OS
and Thunderbird user, about a half-dozen years or so ago.

And why do I use Pan? a) I like to separate mail from news, thus
eliminating the possibility of error of sending a personal email to a
newsgroup (you've seen it happen, I'm sure), and b) it's a better
newsreader. ;-)

Best of luck; hope you solve your issue.
