Can I filter out all posts coming from Google groups?
AFAIK TB 2 will not do that.

Yes. Starting from Thunderbird 3, you can filter news posts based on any
header.

Thank you very much.
Since I am now ready to try TB 3 can I (how) have TB2 and TB3 on the
same machine?

TIA

When you go to create a new filter or add to an existing filter, there
are three inputs to define the filter. The first two are pull-down
selection lists.

When you select the first (left-most) selection list, you will see
Customize at the bottom. Select it. You are then given a dialog window
to input any message header type (e.g., User-Agent, Injection-Info). Of
course, you will have to be viewing the source of an offending message
to see on which header you will be filtering and what content (the third
input) to use.

On occasion, I might filter and ignore all newsgroup messages
posted through GoogleGroups via Google's G2/1.0 user agent
because of spam from that source.

In TB 2 right clicking the header in an offending message gets me
started nicely. TB3 have same feature?

You can, but going back and forth with the same profile is not
recommended. Are you using IMAP for email or POP? If you are using IMAP,
create a new profile [1], then install each version of Thunderbird in a
separate location.

If you're using POP, it gets a lot more complicated.

I just tested Tbird 3.1.7. The answer is sometimes "yes", but more
often "no".
