I would like to have a Thunderbird shortcut key for Compact Folders

The only thing I found dates from 2004 using Keyconfig, which does not
appear to be relevant to Thunderbird 38.5.0.

Suggestions?

Hi. While I don't think that TB has an accelerator key which will do
this, you could press alt-F to open the File menu, followed by the
letter F for the compact folders feature. I'm visually impaired and so
I'm used to doing everything via keyboard commands. So, it's just alt-F, F..

Get the Toolbar Buttons extension from
<https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/toolbar-buttons/>
and install it. Right-click on Thunderbird's menu bar or tool bar and
select Customize from the pull-down context menu. In the Customize
Toolbar window, find the Compact button; it is a golden yellow rectangle
superimposed with a pencil. Drag it from the Customize Toolbar window
to either the menu bar (where I have mine) or the tool bar.

Will that compact all folders in one click?

I have not experimented; but I know that, if I select an account and
then selecting the button, it compacts all folders and subfolders in
that account. In this case, it does not compact folders in other
accounts. I believe the button will compact just one folder if you
select the folder before selecting the button.

Because I have read in other threads in this newsgroup about problems
with compacting very large folders, I compact my primary E-mail account
at least daily. I compact my RSS feed account about once a week.
Compacting newsgroup accounts appears to be meaningless; "Compact" is
not available in the pull-down context menu for newsgroups.

I'm not seeing the utility of this plug-in. I can compact the folders in
an account with 'File' | 'Compact folders', keyboard shortcut: [Alt+F]
[F]. If the plug-in simply replaces [Alt+F] [F], well, is it worth it?
If it compacted ALL folders in one shot, that would be a different
story. Or am I misunderstanding something?

First of all, it is NOT a plugin. Toolbar Buttons is an extension.
There are some very real differences between plugins and extensions.
Those differences have been explained before several times in various
Mozilla newsgroups, so I will not explain them here.

The issue is user preferences. I prefer buttons over menus; buttons
involve less navigation. I also prefer buttons over shortcuts; with
buttons, I do not have to remember that Ctrl-W means "Close". (In what
strange universe is "W" mnemonic for "Close"?) Also, many shortcuts
involve Ctrl or Alt plus another key, which often requires an
uncomfortable stretch of my ancient hand.

The Compact button from the Customize widget doesn't work for you, requiring the extension?

Actually, I installed the Toolbar Buttons extension before noticing the
Compact button. So I do not know whether the button was supplied by the
extension or was inherent in Thunderbird's "vanilla" customization.

Does the "Customize" Compact button in fact compact all folders in one
shot ? Or do you need to select each folder individually (Same for the
menu pulldown under File (Mac w/TB 38.5.1)

The compact button is standard.

I'm not sure, maybe the user could select all folders by selecting the
first folder, then Shift and select the last folder, then press the
Compact button.

Nope.

I luv shortcuts; combinations with modifier keys, so I can keep my hands
on the keyboard instead of keyboard mouse keyboarding.

Because I like shortcuts, I LUV sticky keys so that I don't have to do
anything awkward. I hit the modifier key and let it go and the
'stickiness' makes its function hold until the non-modifier key is
struck. If there are two modifiers plus a non-modifier, I can hit mod-1
then mod-2 then non-mod.

Very very rarely some functionality will arise which doesn't work
properly with sticky keys.

I select the account and then the Compact button. I see several folders
being compacted as indicated in the Thunderbird status bar.

You can thus compact an entire account. Or you can select an individual
folder to compact.

As I indicated earlier in this thread, the answer is that the user
determines how to accomplish tasks: menus, buttons, or keyboard
shortcuts. There is no correct answer.
