I see the following files in my C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird folder:

MapiProxy.dll
MapiProxy_.dll
MapiProxy_InUse.dll
mozMapi32.dll
mozMapi32_.dll
mozMapi32_InUse.dll

The files with the underscore (no InUse) are dated 10 December, the
others 16 July
The corresponding registry entries point to the 'InUse' files
I imagine this has something to do with updates. Could it have something
to do with my e-mailing from application problem?

XP Pro SP3

Don't know who created those underscore versions. Did you ever yourself
renamed those files ( MapiProxy.dll and mozMapi32.dll ) to fix any
thunderbird update issue?
Btw, currently Tb uses 'mozMapi32_InUse.dll' and 'MapiProxy_InUse.dll'
to avoid file lock issue caused by other application ( Logitech webcam ).

If you are experiencing 'Send to' problem then you can follow this
workaround
"https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=499958#c13".
