When I get an email with an attached image (jpg mostly), and with
cameras these days making 12 mega pixel pics, the picture is huge when I
open up the mail. I can't get it to fit to save my life. I got a
picture of a bicycle and I could only see the handlebars.

When this started happening to me (mostly photos taken by my brother,
who lives about 450 miles from me), I sent a reply to his E-mail asking
him to resize the images before sending them.

If that does not initially work for you, here is a suggestion. Take a
screen-shot of what you do see, save it as a JPEG file, and reply to the
E-mail with the screen-shot attached. In your reply, act naive and ask
"This is what you sent me. What is it?"

Many isp's don't even accept mail that large. But the other common
method - resizing before sending - isn't a great idea either, since
most people don't know how to do that properly, and much software
does is the bad way: by resizing instead of resampling, making the
result look horrible.
Next time it happens ask the sender to (re)send large-size pics via
WeTransfer or similar service.

The easiest way to view picture that are too large to be viewed in the
message box, is to copy them to an image viewing program like Irfanview.
In there you can easily reduce them or what ever.

Right click on the image in the message box, select copy image, paste it
into the open image veiwer.

Since you probably have an image viewer on you computer, you do not have
to install any special programs.

And seems to work for me too.
I know how to save it or preview in Windows Photo Viewer, but it seems
like TB should just do it by default.

Mebbe so, but here's a puzzle: whether or not the image fits the TB
viewing window seems to depend on the image source. Eg, those sent from
an iPhone fit, with the cursor changed to a + in a circle. Click on it,
and the image enlarges to original size. Click on the -= in a circle,
and it reverts to fit.

Interesting, thank you.

For manual image resizing there is Image Zoom at
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/image-zoom/
Have been using it for years and find it useful.

How exactly is that 'easier' than just clicking on the message and
seeing the picture in full view auto resized to fill the window size?

I'll give it a look, thanks... seems to be better supported a first
glance (works on 32).

Can you elaborate on 'better'...? How/why is it better?

Yeah, thats been in my collection for many years too...

I've always wondered why the author didn't add a simple 'auto-fit
images' option...

Well, I don't see how you are comparing these, they do two totally
different things.

'Fit Images' simply sets the ZOOM factor so that the image is re-zoomed
to fully *display* in the window, so no scrolling is required to see it.
It doesn't do anything to the physical image.

Auto-Resize-Image is designed to automatically physically resize images
(ie, 3MB > 250KB) that you are *sending*.

So, an interesting Addon, but not even remotely close to the same thing.

Already pointed out the fact that you are comparing apples and oranges.

The one you referred to does something completely different from the
'Fit Images' Addon.

So, saying it did not work, because it didn't do what you thought it
did, is dumb.

My profuse apologies...

So, just out of curiousity, what would you call it when someone says
that something that works precisely as advertised - like the 'Fit
Images' Addon - 'doesn't work', just because that person was confused
about what it's function was, and was looking for an Addon that did
something else entirely?
