I use Thunderbird at work. Usually I configure a LDAP Directory in Address Book that talks to my client's Active Directory (i.e. the Outlook Global Address Book). This is convenient and I can stay using Thunderbird because I can look up all of the people there using that.

But I've been finding that this is causing me a lot of problems when addressing email. I'll type a few characters and then TB will freeze. The window title will change by appending the familiar (Not Responding) thing and tens of seconds later it will return and I can go on.

Now I thought that TB was supposed to ask LDAP "Hey look this name up" and LDAP would return with usually the first 100 entries that qualify. And I understand that this is probably the cause of the delay but I thought it used to be such that you can continue to type an only when you paused did an LDAP search get called. Further I thought that this was interruptible in that when you started typing again the LDAP search is aborted until you pause again or leave the field. But what I'm experiencing is a definite delay/lock up of TB.

Is there anything I can do? Can I set a longer timeout or a shorter interrupt period?

Does this happen when you are typing in e-mail addresses in To:, Cc: or Bcc:
field?

If so, then you are hitting this very slow completion problem in the latest
release.

I notice the delay is causing mistyping of the address EVEN THOUGH I DO NOT
USE LDAP, and so
coupled with LDAP lookup the slowdown is causing you the problem.

I posted a message regarding the obvious slowdown with the subject
"Slow (?) completion in address field when an e-mail is created."
to mozilla.dev.apps.thunderbird newsgroup on Sept 26 and it
was pointed out there exists the following bugzilla entry:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1012397

So people are aware of the issue, but I am not sure how this is going to be
played out.
You might want to chime in stating the issue you observe as LDAP user.

OK now TB is crashing like 3 or 4 times a day on me. Often when completing email addresses but not always then. TB's pretty unstable right now for me.

this is like a 10 year old bug that the "developers" cannot fix.
