If you see an error message when using SSL, try using TLS instead.
Port: 993

As mentioned in other posts I am able to send/receive email just fine so
my settings are correct. I just cannot sync the sent mail folder with
icloud.com which I believe is a TB bug.

Just because you can send and receive doesn't mean that all settings are
correct.

Obviously.

I followed all the settings exactly on the website. The bug is in TB.

Here's moz support's page:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/imap-synchronization

.... particularly the graphic
https://support.cdn.mozilla.net/media/uploads/gallery/images/2011-03-14-10-07-44-914d74.jpg

.... which does not show the Sent folder.

I like the moz kb articles, which are sometimes old and not linked by
moz support

http://kb.mozillazine.org/IMAP:_advanced_account_configuration

I'm not familiar with icloud's mail, but that article mentions the
(potential) glitch of:

"Many IMAP servers default to a Sent Items folder, not a Sent folder.
Thunderbird defaults to 'Sent' in "Tools -> Account Settings -> Copies &
Folders -> When sending messages automatically". Thunderbird will not
create the folder if it doesn't exist."

Anyway, the 'synchronization' business is not (exactly, to me) how IMAP
gets synchronized; that is, IMAP synchronizes the server's (concept of)
folder/directories with the client's (concept of) folders/directories,
so they need to match. If they match, then what is in the servers
directory should also be in the client's directory.

TB works exactly as it should with IMAP (which is why I don't use IMAP,
but that's another issue). From here, it looks like iCloud doesn't work
exactly as it should with IMAP.

Here's a question whose answer may provide a hint of a solution: Where
is the Sent folder that iCloud uses? It should be on the mail server
(the one used by your mail service). It should not be on the iCloud
website. Once you have the answer, an IMAP expert may be able to help you.

He has refused my free offer to prove it is not a TB bug, so I'll just
post my last response to yours...

His problem is most likely that the other clients he says are working
correctly are using a different 'Sent' folder. I know Outlook by default
wants to use a folder named 'Sent Items', and my first guess is that
icloud uses that, and both Outlook and Apple Mail are using it for the
Sent folder, but TB is using a folder just called 'Sent', so TB's sent
messages are all going there, and sent messages from the other clients
are going into 'Sent Items', and his TB is not subscribed to this folder.

This could easily be revealed by simply unchecking:

Tools > Account Settings > Server Settings > Advanced > Show only
subscribed folders

Or, he could actually go in and look at what folders are/are not
subscribed - but of course, this requires one to at least have a fair
understanding of IMAP and how it works to grok what you are seeing.

Since John has decided this is a TB bug, I don't expect him to listen to
reason, or to consider the possibility that his understanding is faulty.

That shot has an Advanced button near the top.

Click it and show the screenshot of all of the/your folders.

Actually I found the problem and that is that TB by default is copying
sent email to a folder called Sent. Icloud.com, IOS Apple Mail, Mac OSX
Apple Mail, and MS Outlook 2011 copy email to the sent messages folder.
I had to change the settings to copy mail to that folder by default. I
know its a royal pain that TB has this limitation and by default has to
operate that way, but I got my problem solved.

"Limitation"? Hardly.

"Royal pain"? Well it's Apple who chose the unconventional folder
name.

I find your sig offensive. Why should a link to creationist Bible
studies be of any interest whatsoever to someone who doesn't
believe in the Bible?

God has called the elect to salvation and they will respond. To the rest
the Bible says that Satan has blinded them so they cannot hear the
gospel. And the Bible also says that the message of the cross is
foolishness to those that are perishing. So no doubt what I am writing
is a foolish message to most.

Well, of course, that's where they are supposed to go. TB creates that
folder locally when you install the program, and IMAP creates Sent for
your account the first time you send mail.

"Sent" is a sent messages folder. I infer that you mean a folder
labelled "Sent Messages".

Apple has a history of ignoring conventions and standards. They like to
keep their customers to themselves.

Is it invention of Apple or Microsoft ? :-)
As MS is at least equally good in that.

Don't forget to close the bug you couldn't wait to open.
