I've used the email message filters to select and move messages from my
inbox to other subfolders.

But, I see no way to tell a filter to look into some specific subfolder,
& not look at messages in my inbox.

How does one tell a filter to work only on messages in some specific
subfolder?

Thanks :)

create your filter while you are in the folder - it will be for that
folder. After creation, run it manually while still in that folder.
If you create the filter while the main folder is selected (in the left
column)
the filter will work on all subfolders but you need to select it from
the "filters for:" drop down box at the top of the dialog box.

A filter only runs automatically on received messages (and if you have an addon for it on sent as well). It's immaterial where the message is received (you can set the folder per account in the account settings). To run any filter on any other folder manually open the Tools --> Message Filters ... dialog. There's a "Run selected filters on :" drop down where you can choose a specific folder, then click the "Run Now" button. One caveat, you can't run filters you've created for one account on another (if they don't share the same folders like with Local Folders).

As others have said, there is normally no need for this, as filters are
run on received messages. However there is one case where this can be
important - when you have a sever-side filter upstream of Thunderbird
that is moving IMAP messages into subfolders. In the IMAP case, filters
only run on the INBOX folder by default. But that can be overcome with
the JunQuilla extension. Then you may face the issue of adding a search
term for folder. There is no explicit support for this at the moment,
but JunQuilla allows a javascript search term which is very easy to
setup to search for folder.

Oops, I meant FiltaQuilla.
