In the last week, my drafts have remained in the Drafts folder after the
messages have been sent (and "Drafts" is not boldfaced, even though the
message headers are). I save messages every 5 minutes, so sometimes
there are multiple copies of a message in the folder.

I use the Drafts folder in my personal account, not the one in Local
Folders; and I'm using POP3, not IMAP. I haven't made any changes to my
accounts or my options in Thunderbird.

I googled the issue but didn't find any solution to the problem. If it
can be solved, I'll be very grateful.

I just tried it and on my machine it was deleted when the message was sent.  The way I did it was as follows:

1) create a message
2) Save t as draft by going to: File >> Save as
3) Now reopen the draft by double clicking on it
4) Make any changes to it and then send it
5) It should send the message and the copy in draft folder would be deleted.

Hope this helps for your clarification.

That's not what I want to do, I'm afraid. The way Tbird works is that if
I'm composing a message and I haven't sent it in 5 minutes, it gets
automatically saved in my Drafts folder as well as continuing to stay
on-screen. When I then send the message, it should disappear from
Drafts--as it always has in the past. In other words, the message is
already open and waiting for me to finish it. I shouldn't have to go to
Drafts and re-open it.

But can you test it and see if that works?

If so - do you have any Addons/Extensions installed that could cause a
problem (try starting TB is safe mode, and see if the problem goes away)?

I reproduced the problem on Thunderbird 45.1.1, and repairing the Drafts
folder appears to have fixed the problem.

Right click on the folder, select Properties, click Repair.

I changed my setting to save a draft every minute. After starting this
reply, I waited more than a minute to finish. A copy appeared in my
Drafts folder under Local Folders. I then sent this reply.

I will follow up with what happened after I sent this reply. Then I
will try this test again with an E-mail, in an account where drafts are
held in that E-mail account and not in Local Folders.

Is it true that Donald Trump refuses to reveal his
income tax returns because he uses so many questionable
loopholes that he pays no taxes? See

Even if those
loopholes are legal, Trump might be too embarrassed to
admit he pays no taxes.

The test above (newsgroup message) resulted in the draft being removed
from the Drafts folder under Local Folders. The subsequent test (E-mail
message) resulted in the draft being removed from the Drafts folder
under the E-mail account.

Conclusion: Thunderbird is working as expected with respect to draft
messages saved during composition.

This would still work otherwise I would have known that it isn't because I do spend a lot of time writing a message - email or newsgroup because I like to attach screenshots when necessary so this all takes time.  That means, if the draft folder wasn't cleared when the message is sent then I would have 100s of them in it but I don't.  It is completely clear.

There are a couple of bugs related to copies of draft messages not being
deleted:

Bug 549274 - Drafts not deleted on IMAP after message has been sent
(with sendInBackground=true)
https://bugzil.la/549274

Bug 638390 - Old draft mail saved in IMAP Drafts folder is not deleted,
if "save by auto-save" and "save by Save As Draft" happens at same time.
Auto-Save should't be invoked when Send/Save is already requested by user.
https://bugzil.la/638390

Bug 696580 - When sending message with another smtp, saving draft
problem (If send is requested when auto-save is silently running,
auto-save may fail or old draft delete after send may fail)
https://bugzil.la/696580

A possible work-around might be to set sendInBackground to false,
although that might interfere with your normal workflow.

Thank you, Walt! So far, so good. I did the repair, created an email,
let it sit til it showed up in the Drafts folder, and then clicked Send.
It was immediately deleted from Drafts. I hope it continues to work
well. In the future, if I have any problems with folders, I'll start by
using Repair.

Thank you, everyone! I ended up following Walt's suggestion of doing a
Repair on the Drafts folder. It seems to be working...

Hunh. I don't have a Repair choice in my context menu. :/

So now you don't have this?

Repair Folder

Have you right-Clicked on the folder and then selected Properties?  If not do it now and then see if you get it.

Good luck.

My IMAP account saved the draft, then when I sent the message, kept the
draft in the Draft folder, with a Red X and a strike through line across
the Subject. After a while it was automatically deleted.

I think I just lucked out and had a Draft folder that needed repair
under Local folders.

It is not in a context menu, but it is reached through a context menu.

Select the folder, right-click, and select Properties from the context
menu. That gives you a small Folder Properties window with three tabs.
Repair Folder is a button on the General Information tab.

Ah! I suddenly had the same issue, and repair fixed it for me as well.

Thanks Walt!

Spoke too quickly, it did it again for 3 different emails. Oh well...
