I am using TB to get my email from google (using Imap).

One of the things that Google does very well is filter spam. I have my
TB settings for this account to use the Google Spam folder as the junk
folder.

Now my problem (and it's a minor one) - when Google filters the incoming
messages and determines that something is a spam message, it puts the
message into the Spam folder with UNREAD STATUS.

Is there a way to get either Gmail or TB to automatically mark those
messages as read?

TB: Edit/preferences [or tools/options]/ Privacy / junk:"Mark messages
determined to be junk as read"

a folder on the google server, yes?

Would this apply to folders on google? I'm not sure how the IMAP would
work in this instance - doesn't seem like google would like taking
directions for their own servers from Tbird but dunno...can't find any
settings on google that give one any leeway on how to handle spam - it
doesn't show up in the Tbird junk folder for my POP.

He's talking about Gmail's Spam folder, not TB's Junk folder.

A common Spam or Junk indicator does not seem to have been nominated or
supported in the IMAP accounts that I have. Don't know whether Google
has it and Tb could possibly recognize it. Probably some RFC will tell
what the defacto standard is. Will need to do some testing to find out.

The problem, as I see it, is TB allows you to choose which IMAP folders
to check for mail, but unfortunately, a bug causes it to sometimes check
for mail in folders it's not supposed to. For that reason, I
unsubscribed (completely) from both Spam and All Mail on my Gmail
account. Hopefully, that's fixed in TB3.

In my case, they are one and the same (since in the account settings I
told TB to use the Gmail Spam folder as the junk folder).

Even so, TB should not be showing that folder as having new messages
when Gmail adds to it, unless you've specifically told it to do so.
When using IMAP, you have the option whether or not to check each folder
for new messages. TB often ignores that setting.
