I cannot figure out whether the new Thunderbird 78 supports the OAuth2
mail security protocol. Anybody knows?
It seems that those who have an AT&T email address cannot log into
their account with Thunderbird, unless OAuth2 is supported...

OAuth2 works here in 78 with gmail and AOL, and has since a version in the 60 branch, but it depends on the provider, i.e. it works also with Yahoo, Yandex, mail.ru etc.
The problem with AT&T is they now require a secure mail key for the att.net servers, inbound and outbound, with normal password authentication, or the regular account password with OAuth2 if the Yahoo servers are used, e.g. imap.mail.yahoo.com and smtp.mail.yahoo.com.
