Win XP Sp2 T'bird 2.0.0.24
When I run backup today I get a message on Thunderbird profile saying
cannot backup because of "parent lock"? Looked all through options
and account settings for "parent lock". T'bird "help" is useless, as
usual. Haven't changed anything, nothing installed in weeks. Mama
died in '92, so she didn't do anything. I'm at a loss. So I turn to
you fine folks.
What's up with this?

A "parent.lock" file has to do with which profile is in use while
Thunderbird or Firefox is open. It doesn't need to be backed up and is
safe to ignore.

the "Lock" is a file in the active profile that exists only while the
program is running. Yet, there are instances when it persists, such as a
power outage shut down. Check the Task Manager to see if TB is still
running, stop it if it is.
If no active TB, then use Windows Explorer and goto the profile and delete
the file parent.lock if it exists.

Thanks guys. This was the problem. I usually close T'bird before a
backup, but I guess I forgot in this case. I reran with no problems.
I suspect this has happened before and I just never noticed.
Thanks for the help.
Bob

When you close TB and/or FF, the file parent.lock disappears.

you are aware that SP2 is out of date and urgently needs to be
updated? TB 2.0.0.24 as well, but I can understand that you stick
with it :-)

Linux users, at least of the slackware variety, use 'lock', not
'parentlock'.
I have batch files that kill thunderbird AND remove the lock file.
Saves a lot of time :-(
