I am attempting to migrate away from Microsoft to Thunderbird and Open
Office products. I would like to know if there is an add-on for a Thesaurus
function within Thunderbird. I have read all the posts (most appear to be a
year or so old) regarding this subject and it does not appear to exist. The
instructions for adding Snappy Words or The Thesaurus along with the other
options say download the file. Only when you download nothing happens
except the add-on is added to Firefox. The file is an HTML file and not an
XPI file as was suggested. I am trying to get to the point where I can
right click the mouse and the Thesaurus option will appear and give me a
list of synonyms. Or, as in Outlook hitting a function key such as Cntrl F7
etc... Does anyone know if/when something might be developed? Thanks in
advance for any information.

To install any addon in Thunderbird, right click in the download link in
your web browser (Firefox) and save the file to somewhere you can find
it. I put mine on the desktop. Then in Thunderbird click Tools>Addons
and drag the file you saved into the addons window and follow the prompts.

I just checked and both Snappy Woerd and The Thesarus download XPI files.

David, thanks for the reply. I have tried saving the download as you
suggested. However, it says xml (I mistakenly said HTML originally
DUH!) not xpi. That is true of all the add-on listed under TB on the
down load page. I even tried downloading via IE8. No change. What
am I missing? FYI I am running Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT
5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.5) Gecko/20091102 Firefox/3.5.5 (.NET CLR
3.5.30729) on Windows XP Home. Thanks again.

To install Tbird addons just go to tools/addon/getextensions
then click your addon. Click save and specify your directory for
download.Once there
open the tbird addons window click install and then go to where ever
you put the download. Will then install without human intervention.

Pen, thanks. Going that route does not provide a Thesaurus option for
Tbird.

OP was talking about, I think, clicking the "Download Now" button will
popup "Add Search Engine" window asking

<Quote>
Add "Snappy Words" to the list of engines available in the search bar?
From: addons.mozilla.org
[ ] Start using it right away
[Add][Cancel]
</Quote>

Right click the "Download Now" and select "Save Link As..." will not
save the addon but a XML page lead to the above quote, AFAIK.

It happened on The Thesaurus addon as well. Other addons, like Enigmail
& Lightning "Download Now" buttons seem to be working OK.

You're right, I misread the file extension. I hadn't downloaded them, I
just moused over the download link. I'm nor sure how to, or even if
it's possible to, install those XML files in Thunderbird. Maybe someone
else can jump in here.

One way of achieving this, is to install the "Simple Search For"
extension:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/5467?src=reco

Then, go in and put "http://thesaurus.reference.com/browse/" (or
whatever the URL your favorite online thesaurus uses before the word
you want to search) in the "Base URL" text box. Now, select the
"double-click to search" check-box, and save. Double click any word,
and it will automatically look it up in your favorite online Thesaurus.

Perhaps one of these add-ons:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/search?q=Thesaurus+&cat=all&advancedsearch=1&as=1&appid=18&lver=any&atype=0&pp=20&pid=5&sort=&lup=

Not sure, but I think those are all search engines for FF, mistakenly
marked for TB.
Or maybe I missed how to install the search engine XML in TB?

Thank you Peter, the add-ons you suggested are for FireFox not TB.
The support group has been helpful in providing the same information
you suggested. It does not appear there is a solution to the
problem. There is one workaround by using another set of add on I've
found (simple search and thunderbrowse) that sorta addresses the issue
but not definitively. Thanks again.

When you download add-on's for Thunderbird, you must save it to your
hard-drive first, then use Thunderbird's add-on Install button.

Since the Thesaurus add-ons currently available are basically direct
links to websites, yes, I think ThunderBrowse is your best bet for
creating the illusion of a built-in thesaurus in Thunderbird.

Thanks KristleBawl, the Thesaurus add-on's are not for TB. They are
for FF. They are XML files and even if you save them to your hard
drive you can't load them in TB. They are categorized incorrectly on
the web site.

There is an extension to compose message in external editor.

You can map OO with Tb and take advantage of Thesaurus ( Ctrl + F7 )
feature of OO.

Unfortunately i can't test it in my system ( in nightly build this
extension failed to work and i currently don't have Tb2 installed in
system) and in extension page it is not clearly mentioned if this
extension will work with OO :( .
