Thunderbird 17.0.6 has started showing incorrect unread message
notifications. It is showing some unread messages when there aren't any.
In addition my Trash folder is showing a lot of emails but then I click
on the folder it shows just a few of them. Any ideas?

I've seen something somewhat similar in various beta versions of
Thunderbird, apparently due to the use of a rather large number
of folders.

To correct the total number of messages (both read and unread),
just click on the folder.

Correcting the number of unread messages takes longer. First
click on the folder, the click on Unread, then enter a ctrl-A,
then right click on one of the messages, right click again,
click on Mark, click on As Read, click on Mark again, click on
As Unread. You can then click on Unread again if you want to
see the messages already read. I'm not sure if this works if
the number of unread messages shown is larger than the correct
number.

You may want to empty the Trash folder. Click on File, then
Empty Trash. This should delete all the messages under Trash.
This may or may not remove any folders under Trash; if it doesn't,
shut down Thunderbird, then restart it.

In my case, I found that it isn't technically an error; just a case of how the numbers are reported in TB.

In Favorite Folders View, TB includes subfolders in its unread Inbox count; so if you use subfolders, it gets a bit tricky. For example, I use several Favorite folders, instead of looking at a huge list. Some (not all) of my favorites are subfolders of my Local Folders Inbox; but in Favorites view, they all just show as a list, so it's not obvious which ones are subfolders of it and which aren't. As my subfolders get Unread msgs, their count goes up, and so does my Local Folders Inbox.

So to see how many Unread are in my Inbox, I just switch to view All Folders. Then the Inbox adjusts its total and reports correctly. At first I thought it was an error, and I suspect this is the case for some other people as well. Hope this helps.

Hi....I have been searching for the last 4 months looking for an answer to the ever increasing tally of unread emails when there were none...i pulled out what is left of my hair...after nearly destroying my emails account by deleting MSF (luckily I saved the App data roaming tbird file first, well it turns out the vey simple answer was indicated above...and that was I had saved unread emails to my sub-folders and these folders were hidden to save space...so I unhid the folders and marked all folders as read and that was it...fixed!!

If you delete the .msf files they will be rebuilt when you (re)start TB.
They are just index files; your emails were just fine.

And make sure to clean up the Inbox etc from time to time, then Compact
Folders.

Or even repair the folder by right-clicking on the folder and then looking for something like in this picture:

How to repair the TB folder

Exactly the same thing as deleting the msf files but this method saves you the hassle to find the hidden folders on a windows system.

I forgot to mention that of course deleting the MSF files did not solve the problem (as well as messing with my hundreds of contacts)...and it couldn't have worked because the unread's were still there hiding...fosss

Yes...the MSF is rebuilt, but I had devised a way of sorting my contacts list with most often contacts at top of contact listin a particular order, and that was the part that was destroyed...also I have discovered that I could have found these unread emails very easily by using edit>find messages>search all folders and use criteria ....find status>isnt>read...that method would be very handy for some one who had hundreds of folders to check for unread emails...it also found one email that was not in any folders and showed up this morning as unread...hmm(not sure how it was there)

Try View|Folders|Unread

Or a Saved Search folder,  using your criteria.

I don't know why your contacts (Address Book? ) would be messed up by deleting msf files. Msf files manage the display of *messages* and have no interaction with Contacts.

Hi Chris...Yes View folders unread would have been the easiest way of all...I just did not think properly about it...as I mentioned when I removed MSF the sorting of my Contacts (which I had done by adding a certain number of dots before the name) was changed to not sorted not sorted except by alphabet or email addy...that is what happened so I cant be wrong...and when copying back my profile I had saved before removing MSF files the problem was fixed...also as I mentioned removing every MSF file for the inbox did nothing to the unread because they were still there in hidden folders...

anyway the problem was easily fixed either by unhiding files and marking them read or by doing an edit search for status isnt read..and so would view folders unread...either way does work, my original problem was instead of thinking logically about it I was searching the internet for answers...which strangely enough I can find the answer in many places now....fosss
