On what server?

So, You Think You Know Everything?
Did you know that Al Capone's business card said he was a used
furniture dealer.
This is mostly caused by clicking on links to already existing news
accounts, which results in a phantom duplicate account. Go to
Tools-->Account Settings, and remove the news account, and restart
Thunderbird. The news account should still appear in the folder pane. If
you still get the subscribe prompt, remove the account and restart
again. Keep doing it, until the account no longer gives you the prompt.

I take it, Chris, that there's no way to stop this behaviour in the
configuration? I personally can't see any use in automatically
subscribing to a news account by following a link, and would be glad to
be able to turn the behaviour off permanently.

Remove "x" from address to reply by email.
If you have multiple news server accounts with the same news
server addresses, this will happen.
I would suggest deleting all of the accounts that have the
same address, removing their files and directories from the
profile, then re-creating the news account.
You are right Chris, whenever you click on a newsgroup link , Thunderbird
creates some entries in pref.js , something like this one
mail.identity.idX.useremail user set String inv...@invalid.com
( X= no of account )
If you don't complete account configuration , "mail.identity.idX.useremail"
remains in pref.js so that next time TB will ask you to complete account setting
. To stop this alert only thing you have to do is to set
"mail.identity.idX.valid" to false.
If the (mis)feature is not removed, then it should be changed
so that 1) it does not automatically create a new news server
profile but uses the current active profile, and 2) it only
asks the user once if s/he wants to subscribe.
If it can be configured out in about:config it can be a personal choice.
Yes, first delete the extra news server account.
Then add a new identity to the old account: Edit/Account
Settings/<Your-Account>/Manage Identities....
Don't snip attributions.
After you set up your alter ego, when replying or posting, choose the
e-mail address you want to send from in the from down box on the "from"
line of the message.

Not that I know of.

It's definitely a standard feature. Let's say you want to provide
someone with a link to this newsgroup. It's not on Usenet, so a server
is required in the URL.
Mozilla devs just need to make it cross-check the current server list.
