"An error occurred during a connection to pop.googlemail.com:995.
SSL received a record with an incorrect Message Authentication Code.
(Error code: ssl_error_bad_mac_read)"
There are two other machines that download messages from this account
which are all set up the same and they do not exhibit this issue.
Initially the problem was intermittent as though a particular message
was an issue, but It has gotten to the point that no messages are
downloaded from this account at all on this machine. I removed all of
the email from the inbox, set up a new inbox, but the problem persists
on only this one (rather important) email account.
Any hints or should I just reinstall TB?

Gmail has an excellent troubleshooting wizard specifically for Tbird 3
pop trouble. First it reiterates all of the settings, which you should
look at again even if you think you are configured correctly.

Thank you for the assistance.
I reviewed all the installation details with their tools and, with one
or two minor exceptions, it was set up correctly. After making the
corrections, checking the email address still gave me the same error
message. Then I just removed the email address from TB and
reinstalled it using Mozilla's automatic tool and it still failed. All
the others, which includes other Gmail.com addresses, download fine.
The only real difference I can tell is that on this machine I am using
Avast Free antivirus which is updated to a new version. The other
machines have the professional version. But I unchecked the "scan
incoming and "scan outgoing messages" without any significant change.
I then disabled Avast totally without any change, still the same error
message.
Thanks,

I presume that 'removed the email address' means to remove that pop
account, which would be my recommendation.

Hmm. At least you didn't stumble on Tbird making an IMAP account intead
of a POP.

Gmail's troubleshooter describes a telnet session here
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=180717#
but that session only opens contact with the pop server on 995, it
doesn't go any further.
The other place that gmail help leads to is the forum, which includes a
message with your problem, but not an answer (that I found).

Change the server name to pop.gmail.com and see if any difference.
Also use your complete _gmail address_ as "user name"
Have you compared results with any other POP client?
Test using "recent mode" with _leave mail on server_:

It's not inconceivable that the error might even be due
to something on Gmail's side.
There's a Google help forum specifically for Gmail,
including POP/IMAP issues (first link in page below):

It's harmless to re-run the installer, isn't it?
Lastly (but not leastly :)
"Google is your friend"
http://www.google.com/search?q=ssl_error_bad_mac_read
There might seem to be good leads in some of those results,
and the gist seems to lean towards some hardware or network gear,
driver, proxy, etc.

Hmm...

I couldn't get messages from Gmail a couple of weeks ago. Tbird had
configured server for googlemail.com. Chenged to gmail.com, and no more
problems.
