Using TB6 with WIn7, I have 3 news feeds that I've repeatedly tried to
delete, with no success. I delete the feeds, empty the trash, and
compact folders, then close TBird. When I reopen TBird, the feeds are back.

If I try to "Manage Subscriptions", the feeds in question are listed,
but the "RENOVE" button is grayed out.

Any suggestions? Where is the list of feeds stored?

if you right click news feed in folders pane, do you see "Unsubscribe"?

My advice: Avoid the problem instead of trying to solve it

I use RSSOwl (OS-X and Linux versions also). Also, BBC and others
provide news feeds via web, so I access them with Firefox. I gave up on
TB's news feeds so long ago I've forgotten when. ;-)

Doesn't this do what want? In Folder panel, right click on the server >

No. It shows as "Subscribe"

And today, all three news feeds I'm trying to kill now show up twice
each in the folder pane. Actually they all appear to be related to the
same news feed:

Norton product compatibility with Firefox Updates in Norton Internet
Security 176ec77d
topic Norton product compatibility with Firefox Updates in Norton
Internet Security caa28f80
topic Norton Toolbar for Firefox 5 in Norton Internet Security 1b1a6608

ok. that means there is one more bit of wisdom from devs that they have
changed from v/r 2.0.0.24.

or, are you clicking on main 'news.norton' instead of branches? that is
if 'news.norton' has no branches, only a main 'news.norton'.

ie, for 'news.mozilla.org', i have 3 branches, 'm.general',
'm.support.firefox', and 'm.support.thunderbird'.

with v/r 2.0.0.24, when i right click in left pane on main of news group
and click on "Subscribe", i get a window titled "Subscribe".

along left side of "Select the newsgroups to subscribe to:" and on right
side i cam given choices of "Subscribe", "Unsubscribe", "Refresh", and
a grayed out "Stop".

when i click [+] in front of a newsgroup, that group expands to show
sub groups and a check mark in box to sub group that i am subscribed.

now, to reason this out as to how to subscribe, i will leave up to you.

my guess would be 2;

1] with check mark in newsgroup box, click "Unsubscribe", then "OK"
at bottom.

2] <ctrl>+click to highlight newsgroup/s, click "Unsubscribe", then "OK"
at bottom.

chris ilias's blog page;

http://ilias.ca/moznewsgroups-tb

gives step-by-step instructions with "4x5 inch glossies" to subscribe,
but i guess his "4x5 inch glossies" to unsubscribe did not 'turn out',
so he did not give instructions on how to unsubscribe. :-D

Just to clarify, these are RSS Feeds, not conventional news groups.

In the Manage Subscriptions window, there is a folder for each feed. You
need to expand the folder to see the feed, then select the feed within
the folder, and the [Remove] button will be enabled.

The is a screencast I made a few years ago, that shows it:

would it not be relevant to just include in;

http://ilias.ca/moznewsgroups-tb

how to remove a newsgroup?

or, make a step-by step page for removing?

also, if the "right click, select Subscribe" is still works in later
versions as i see it in v/r 2.0.0.24, you could also shown step-by-step
of both subscribe and unsubscribe.

Chris:

That doesn't seem to work.

Here are three screenshots:
http://usscouts.org/mb/temp/clipboard01.jpg
http://usscouts.org/mb/temp/clipboard03.jpg
http://usscouts.org/mb/temp/clipboard04.jpg

The feeds in question in the first image are the two starting with
"Norton" and the four starting with "topic Norton"

The second image shows what happens when I right click the highlighted
feed from the first image. Note no > mark before the RSS symbol

For the four "topic..." feeds, I can get the remove button to appear, as
shown in the third image, but clicking on "YES" has no effect.

Is there a file in the profile directory that I can edit offline to
delete the feeds manually?

How about tools>account settings>remove account?

Not sure how it would work on a duplicate account as I have one but am
worried it might remove both.

Nope. Does the same thing, as does right clicking and choosing Delete,
or just highlighting the feed name and using the delete key.

It looks to me like the feed is deleted, and what you're seeing is the
folder. Your theme is using the same icon for both. In the Mail &
Newsgroups window, try selecting the folder you want to delete and
clicking "Delete".

Tried that 3 times (including emptying the trash and compacting the
folders). Didn't work. They reappeared again each time I tried, as
soon as I closed and reopened TBird.

Finally looked one more time through the profile, found the "feeds"
sub-directory under "Mail", opened that and saw the folders that kept
reappearing, and deleted them (including one msf file). They now appear
to be gone for good.

Thanks for the help. I just didn't expect to find the feeds where they
were. I thought Mail, RSS Feeds, and News would each in separate
directories in the profile.

BTW, I deleted the images mentioned above from the online location I had
used to store them while tryig to solve the problem.

Paul, thank you.
I was having the exact same problem with an undeletable empty feed
folder.
I couldn't make the mental leap to look for news feeds under the mail
folder, but you did and I was able to solve this problem as well.
ftr, this was under thunderbird 3.1 on ubuntu.
