I'm running Tbird 17.0.6 on Windows XP SP3.

I want to find specific text in the bodies of posts to a specific
newsgroup but I'm having trouble figuring out how to do so. For example,
let's say the newsgroup was this one, mozilla.support.thunderbird, and I
wanted to find all posts containing the word "Rastafarian" in the _BODY_
of the message. How do I go about doing that?

I've tried right-clicking on the newsgroup name, choosing Search
Messages... and then composing a search but I don't see any option to
search the Body of the message, just Subject, To, and other headers. I
tried using Customize to add "Body" and that worked but when I wrote a
filter to find a specific word that I was certain would be present,
nothing was found. I'm inclined to think I didn't create the filter
correctly but I'm not sure what I did wrong.

I've looked in Thunderbird help but have found nothing useful.

I don't want to search the entire Internet or all of Usenet. I'm trying
to search through a single specific newsgroup - I could even narrow it
down to a single thread in this case - for a specific word.

What is the proper technique to use?

You need to download the messages for offline use. That way the message
bodies are available on your computer, where Thunderbird can perform a
search on them.
1. Go to File-->Offline-->Offline_Settings.
2. Click on [Select newsgroups for offline use]
3. Put a check mark beside the newsgroup you want to search, and click [OK].
4. Now, download the messages by going to File-->Offline-->Download/Sync
Now.

Once the messages are available for offline use, the "Body" option
should be available when going to the 'search messages' function.
