Why would this be?

How do you know they were "undelivered"? Did the recipients tell you
that they didn't receive mail from you? And if so, did you tell them to
check their spam filters, etc. ?

No, I didn't tell them to check their spam filters - but should have!
One missing mail was actually a reply to a poster in a newsgroup. He and
I had had a series of messages, then all of a sudden one of mine failed
to arrive. So I re-sent it later.
Rob
Actually, e-mails (and news posts, etc) are lost everyday. The rate is
very low, and the odds that the lost mail will be yours is lower still.
Much, much lower. That's why it's a surprise when it happens. There are
many reasons, the following quote from
http://www.dominopower.com/issues/issue200005/lost001.html
discusses one of them:
"The main cause of "lost" mail is that each email technology uses a
different kind of address. When an email message travels between
different systems, it may pass through gateways that link two or more
fundamentally different email systems together. Gateways have to rewrite
or map addresses from one system, such as the Internet, to another
system, such as Microsoft Exchange, and then back again. This process is
often fraught with errors, and it is the primary cause of lost email."
FWIW, your computer makes internal errors at the rate of about 1 in 10^9
or less. You don't notice them, because usually the machine just repeats
the operation. No external storage system is error free, all disks
include error correction codes so that the disk operating system can
correct the errors as it reads them. Almost all errors are corrected,
but now and then one gets through. Also, errors accumulate with repeated
read/write operations. This is one reason some software "suddenly" stops
functioning correctly, and reinstallation may be necessary.
And don't underestimate the effects of cosmic rays and radon gas on the
li'l bits and pieces in your machine. They can flip a bit, which usually
doesn't matter, but once in a while you'll get a crash, and the data on
the BSOD indicates a memory error. This is almost always a transient
error, the reboot fixes it.
Considering all the sources of error in our machines, it's amazing they
are as reliable as they are.

In similar but slightly different vein, I note that I posted a reply to
an OP recently and he posted back. Then someone else posted a reply to
his post-back. A couple of days later I wanted also to reply to his
post-back, but it had disappeared! Is the cause of this bound up with
the reasons you gave for non-delivery?
Rob
View --> Messages --> All
View --> Threads --> All
If either or both of these is/are set to "Unread" instead of
"All" that's one reason why you might not be able to see that post.

I see View/Threads/All, but I don't seem to see View/Messages/All.
There's no option re Messages in my toolbar
Rob
The "View" you need to check is the drop down menu situated between
"Edit" and "Go" on the top selection bar (File, Edit, View, Go, Message,
Tools, Help).

Sorry 'bout that. I'm still using TB 1.5, and I had forgotten
that that was removed from the UI in TB2. Based on my recollection of
posts I've read here, it's possible to restore it to the UI. Bear
with me a little because I don't have a copy of TB2 for reference.
1. Right-click on the/a toolbar and click on the "Customize..."
button.
2. In the "Customize Toolbar" dialog box that opens, there should
be a "View" "widget" (probably a box containing a drop-down
arrow). Drag-and-drop it onto the toolbar, and close the
"Customize Toolbar" dialog box.
3. There should now be a "Messages" option under the "View" menu.
Select "All" as previously mentioned.
Ah! That's better! Interestingly, when I put the widget into the toolbar
the 'Messages' option also appears in the drop down list in View.
However, the problem of the missing post is not solved. It's still
missing!

That's what I said in #3. ;-) The two items are "linked", that
is, you either have both or neither.

One other possibility comes to mind. Was that in one of the
mozilla.support.* newsgroups? If so, it's possible that the post in
question was removed by the moderators, but you initially saw it
before they got to it.
