Only on an IBM T30 Laptop running WIN XP PRO SP2 am I having this
problem. On my desktop PCI Express PC running XP PRO SP2, both programs
run OK. But I am running Thunderbird 1.0.6 [not 1.5] with Firefox
1.5.0.1 on Desktop while Laptop runs Thunderbird 1.5 and Firefox 1.5.0.1.
The WIN XP installation is the usual on Desktop PC, WIN XP apps are on
c:\ hdd in C:\Programs Files. On the Laptop, there is a TINY C:\
partition where a FEW WIN XP apps are stored and a large D: partition
for all other WIN XP apps including Thunderbird and Firefox.
The error messages are SIMILAR for both Firefox and Thunderbird
Both Thunderbird and Firefox will not start and the error msg is "XML
Parsing error:undefined entity.
^"Window ID="messengerwindow"
----^<menuitem insertafter="pagesourceMenuitem"= label=
"&menu_securitystatus.label; "accesskey = "&openattachment"
--^menuitem id= "context-openattachment"
--^commanditem = "command_undo""&openAttachmentCmd.label; " accesskey =
"&openatachment"
What can be done to allow both programs to install and run OK?
I am not able to proceed and really need help.
Thanks, Dave_s
Uninstall Thunderbird, reboot, remove the "C:\Program Files\Mozilla
Thunderbird" folder, then install Thunderbird.

The directory tree is very odd on the IBM Laptop.
The folders :Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird and :\Program Files\
Mozilla Firefox do not exist on either the C or D drives.
On the D:\Program Files HDD is a folder called \Chrome. In the startup
menu are Mozilla Thunderbird and Mozilla Firefox entries. But
Thunderbird.exe and Firefox.exe are under D:\Program Files, not in their
own mozilla folder.
The c: partition only 2.2 GB of space left so hesitate to install
either onto C: where both programs try to install.
When I try to install into D:\Program Files XP asks me to make a new
folder. I made D:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird. But that folder
never appeared in D:Program Files.
I am still having trouble installing both and they do not appear in the
desired folders, D:\Program Files\Mozilla XXX
Thanks for your help. Dave_s
Sounds like either, the original installation of Thunderbird was a
custom install, done incorrectly, or you've got an OS problem. Splitting
"Program Files" between two drives doesn't help either.
First make sure you have adequate OS permissions to install software.
Then look into getting a registry cleaner.
and look into getting a program that will resize your partitions
without loosing all your stuff.

Time for another change
When you install to a non-standard location, you *must* specify the
*complete* path to an existing folder. Thus:
D:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox and
D:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird
must exist and be specified when installing.
Your description of your problem, and subsequent discussion indicates
the both programs were installed in:
D:\Program Files

When I was faced with installing Thunderbird and Firefox on the small
C: partition, and instead elected to install on D:, this forced me to do
a 'custom install'. Yes, the install did seem to be a bad install.

I agree. This is my first contact with a PC where
"Program Files" were split and it has been a constant headache to
backup. I would NEVER do that again.

I seem to have adequate permissions since all other softwares installed
error free.

Can you recommend an adequate "registry cleaner" for WIN XP PRO?
I do own the most current Partition Magic. Will look into resizing
partitions. Then move all programs onto C:.
Thanks again, Dave_s
What registry cleaner is good for WIN XP?
Thanks, Dave_s

Later I will be chnaging the C and D partitions so C is largest and can
receive all windows applications. For now, I am again trying to install
on d:\
I tried reinstalling in D:\ again:
Found how I was incorrectly using NEW FOLDER for custom installing
Thunderbird on D:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird and corrected. Now
both Firefox and Thunderbird exe's on D:\ are in the expected folders
D:\Program Files\Mozilla\THunderbird and same for Firefox.
BUT, Thunderbird does not run right and some PROFILE folders were put
on C:\ under Application Data...see below.
During this latest install, I cannot prevent either program from
creating on the C: HDD, the folders under C:\Documents and
Settings\Dave_S\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles AND
C:\Documents and Settings\Dave_S\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles.
During installation I do not seem to be given a choice of CUSTOM or to
CREATE NEW FOLDER for PROFILES.
Is there a work around so I can create on D:\ those needed folders
[PROFILES] for Thunderbird and Firefox and delete those folders now
apprearing on C:\?

That's a Windows standard practice.
Windows user profiles are by default on the OS drive,
and the practice of using a user profile as a default location
for user personal data is somewhat dictated by Microsoft
(if a vendor wants a product to be "Windows certified"),
so it's not a matter of "not having run right."
I first installed TB so long ago that I don't recall
whether it initially gave any choice for me to override
the default data location, but I see that in my TB
Tools > "Account Settings" > "Local Folders"
there is a changeable "Local Directory" path,
so perhaps someone can help you with the exact steps
necessary to change this for you
(I'm a very rare user of TB, so I don't know it all,
though I can see that it has the flexibility to be changed).
Windows may even have the flexibility to allow you
to move your entire profile, but that's on
an entirely different level, beyond the scope of TB alone.

No, open the TB Profile Manager, create a new profile where you want
it, then copy everything from the old one to the new one.
