I have recently noticed that many emoticons received in TB email do not
display the correct graphic. Instead, they show a square box and the
message source shows codes such as =F0=9F=98=81

This is happening in the body of the emails and yesterday I noticed it
happening in the subject line of a marketing email from Harbor Freight
Tools.

The character encoding I am using for both incoming and outgoing
messages is Western (ISO-8859-1).

Does anyone know of a solution to this?

That's a graphic, not an emoticon.

Display incoming mail in Original HTML.

Emoticon: a combination of plain text characters

Emoji: a graphic (icon, actually)

Have a good day,

Already set to display as original HTML, thanks anyway.

For emojis, you need a font that includes it.

For emoticons, you need to set the Thunderbird preference. Go to [Tools
> Options > Display > Formatting] and check the "Display emoticons as
graphics" checkbox. NOTE: Thunderbrid translates the markup to a
graphic only in plain-text messages.

The Crimea is Putin's Sudetenland.
The Ukraine will be Putin's Czechoslovakia.

Can you recommend such a font?

That setting is already enabled.

David E. Ross presented the following explanation :

I have installed the Symbola font, from this page:

http://users.teilar.gr/~g1951d/

After setting it as the default font in TB, the graphics appear.
Thanks for sending me off in the right direction.

For those who, like me, don't know 'diddly' (or Diddley) about Emojis
(other than/ byond/ sorta what it means), here's a nice wp article
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emoji

The article's pertinent sections to this thread are found in the
implementation section as well as the various occurrences of the symbola
string.

One might say, "In the beginning it was iPhone."

I also see an opportunity for a 'bar bet' trivia item in the sentence

// Originally meaning pictograph, the word emoji comes from Japanese ...
The apparent resemblance to the English words "emotion" and "emoticon"
is just a coincidence.[7] //

In
<news:mailman.591.1454692895.2...@lists.mozilla.org>,
Symbola should take care of a lot of them.

In general, when you encounter those square boxes, they have the
character's hex code (unicode) inside them. Entering the code at
<http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/search.htm> will find the
character, and once you've clicked through to it there's a link to a
list of fonts that support it.

Good to know, I have a few in my Emoji Menu extension that don't show
when I go to select one. Like this one 🆗.

Thanks!

These are Unicode characters.

To see these emoji/emoticon characters, install a font such as Symbola
which contains these characters. If you see a square box, it means your
computer does not have a font with this character.

In this case (=F0=9F=98=81), the square box will contain the tiny
letters (on two rows)
01F
601
and the Unicode character is U+1F601 GRINNING FACE WITH SMILING EYES,
shown here:
http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/1f601/index.htm
