Only news.mozilla.org is causing crashes in TB3

I subscribe to a number of free USENET news servers. From news.mozilla.org, I
subscribe only to this group (mozilla.support.Thunderbird). I tend to open
TB3.01 and read my e-mail and my USENET news once every 24 hrs. I have my all
my accounts using default TB settings, including downloading only the most
recent 500 headers, and have all groups set to display only unread msgs in the
threaded view.

When I click on the name of any of the other newsgroups in the left-side column,
I get the expected view in the main (right side) column: threaded unread msgs
since my last reading. However, when I click on mozilla.support.Thunderbird, I
get my unread msgs unthreaded. When I click on the little icon at the top to
display the msgs in threaded view, TB3 crashes. The only cure is to right click
on the name of the group and rebuild the index.

I have to do this almost every day. Any thoughts or ideas. Is this an
intrinsic TB bug, a problem with the way news.mozilla.org formats their news
messages, or possibly both?

OK. Let's say that is your preferred view.

I would change that condition using the View menu, so that it will 'stick'.

First I would change View/ Sort by/ to Threaded instead of Unthreaded.
Next I would change/configure the Threads item for what I wanted.

My Win tbird 3.0.1 does not crash when I toggle the icon which is
associated with a column and designated as the 'Thread' column toggler.

Maybe if you fix the condition in the view menu, you won't have to use
that toggle.

It has nothing whatsoever to do with the moz newsserver and its
messages. It is your tbird.

Badly corrupted msf files can lead to such frequent crash.
To avoid more crash, unsubscribe from m.s.thunderbird NG.
Close Tb.
Goto Tb profile folder > News folder > folder of mozilla newsgroup account.
Delete all mozilla.support.thunderbird related files from there.
Start Tb.
Resubscribe to m.s.thunderbird.

Isn't it interesting that I don't have this problem with 3.0.1 TB, and I
use newsgroups alot..

I use XP Pro SP3...maybe some of these things are OS related..Who knows?

I don't understand/see/fathom what your statement has to do with what
the OP posted and what I answered. I don't have that problem with
2.0.0.23 and I don't have that problem with 3.0.1 and I don't have that
problem with 3.1a.1. What does that prove in this thread's context?

I think the OP just didn't get the newsgroup configured correctly - as
he wants it - yet. I don't know about the 'incidental' cause of the
crashing during the thread column toggle. Maybe he can remedy that with
a new .msf file as Nir suggested.

Thanks Mike. However I had previously set the view menu to threaded and it does
stick for every group provided by the other news servers except for this one.
However, if the problem continue to recur, I will take a look at the view menu
preference for threading before clicking on the upper-most left sided icon in
the right sided panel to see if the little dot is still next to the "threaded"
choice. (I assumed that toggling that icon sends the identical commands to TB
as moving the dot in the menu between "unthreaded" and "threaded".)

I think I'll try the suggestion of deleting the .msf file for this group and
starting from "scratch".
P.S. I never had this problem with previous versions of TB.
P.P.S. To answer responder's posting mentioning OS, I do use XP SP-3.

When my indexes broke yesterday I got a phantom thread in this very
group that would not disappear in the "Threads with unread" view. When I
killed the thread, Thunberdird would crash. It was 100% reproducible.

However, I tend to get broken indexes in almost all groups and servers,
two or three times a week so I don't think it's specific to
mozilla.support.thunderbird.
