It is just me that has been frustrated at what they've done with the address book. First they don't import the mab files..making us really have to fight to find a converter if we haven't exported from a previous version to ldif.If it a good enough format to save in then it should be good enough to import from. Secondly this whole difficulty it now has about things being invisible is pure nonsense!
we like to be able to easily find and SEE who we are writing to so we accidentally haven't injected someone else's address. Whose bright idea was to continue mucking about with address book? If you want something better to do work on the import export capability of mab.

It must be you. I have no issues with the address book.

I have a Windows system and 3 Linux systems. To keep the address books
up to date, I update only one system, the Linux system I use daily. I
now and then (after major edits) copy all .mab files in my profile to my
google drive and let them sync. Then on every other system I just copy
from the google drive to that profile and bingo things are updated.

I can also see who I'm writing to. It's in the TO: field.

For working on a renewing of the TB/AB it's of big interest to clearly
understand your concerns, see below. Also what are the changes about or
just which TB versions are you speaking about?

Which addressbooks are missing? Do you speak about defining a new TB
profile? Or after a total reinstall of TB? (which versions, see above)

What is invisible? 'thing' is a very broad description and doesn't help
at all!

Which parts do you miss?

If there is a frustration only clear and objective information helps to
move things.

Please state the version of Thunderbird you are talking about and the
operating system you are using.

I'm posting this with Thunderbird 52.2.1 on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Linux.

What address files are you trying to Import? If you have been using
Thunderbird for any length of time, all your addresses should be there.

What's invisible? You don't need to use the address book to enter an
email address in the To: field of the Composition window, just start
typing the name of the recipient.

If you want to use the address book, select the name from the address
book, right click and select Write from the context menu. That
automatically opens the Composition window with the To: filed filled in.

yeah - hard to have a discussion without you sharing any specific
details with proper descriptions.
When I migrated from Win/XP to Win/10 - I migrated from Outlook EXPRESS
to TB.... and imported everything... emails, address book, etc -
No problem - I really liked using OE for years,
but then when MS dropped it... I came over to TB and have been very happy.
