many thanks for any pointers...
Make sure everyone accessing the account has created the tags in
Thunderbird. They will then see the tags added by others.

Thank you very much for the reply. But this doesn't seem to work.
When the clients are first installed there are 5 or 6 predefined tags
that naturally are all identical. Of course, I did experiment
immediately with these default tags but if I tag a message as "1.
important" (red), for instance, nothing shows in the other clients.
Is there something that I'm overlooking?
By contrast, if I click on the star next to a message so that it
lights up, this does show immediately in the other clients. Reading
around various forums, one person suggested that tags are a local
thing whereas stars are an IMAP thing. So I guess I was wondering if
there was any add-on or alternative way of doing it. Multi-coloured
stars, for instance, would work...
I use a shared IMAP account with tags, so I know it works.
Did you try creating new tags, or use the pre-installed tags?
How sure are you that your IMAP server supports user-defined tags? Not
all do, some might only support a single flag (TB's "Star")
Aha this is the answer, thank you. Mail server is hMailServer that
does not support IMAP keywords. Hence I cannot do what I want to do.
hMailServer has this in their todo list here:

Also that led me to find a Mozilla article about this: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Tags
