Ok, so, I have a problem. While I have obviously have figured out how
to subscribe to the Mozilla Newsgroups using Thunderbird, I have been
unsuccessful in my attempts to subscribe to others. I was hoping that,
by asking hear, I could get advice and help as to what the problem is.

Non-Mozilla newsgroups are on different servers. Most of them, the
so-called "Usenet" newsgroups, are mirrored on servers all around the
world -- perhaps including one run by your own ISP, in which case that's
where you should access Usenet newsgroups, by setting up a different
newsgroup account for a different NNTP server than news.mozilla.org
(both can exist side-by-side in the same instance of Thunderbird). Which
server, which port, and whether to connect with TLS/SSL "always", "if
available" or "never" should be on a data sheet given you by your ISP
when you subscribed to the Internet: they will probably differ from the
details of the Belgian news account I use to connect to comp.editors and
soc.culture.esperanto, but once (and if) you succeed, you should see the
same Usenet groups I do, and maybe (or maybe not) also the newsgroups
which my ISP blocks because "they are known to have been used in the
past to distribute music and video in violation of copyright
legislation" (sic).

Best regards,
Tony.

This news server (news.mozilla.org) does not carry other newsgroups.

You will need to set up another news server account in Thunderbird.
Then subscribe to newsgroups on that other news server.

1. You appear to be on Sympatico or Bell Canada's internet.
If so, you should be able to sign up for another news server
from here: http://www.newshosting.com/bell/home.php

2. Add the news server account to Thunderbird. See
http://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/creating-newsgroup-account
In step 4, enter the name of the other news server.

Ok, So maybe I should have elaborated better. I was already well aware
of the process explained in the second link you gave, however the
problem I have had is that once I use this process, none of the News
servers I attempt to connect to simply do not respond to my connection.

The moz news server does not require log in. Some news servers do, and
some do not. That business is not explained in the momo newsgroup
account creation link cited below.

The link provided to instructions for news.bell.newshosting.com also
provides this par:

Our service requires a Username and Password to be configured within
your News client. This Username & Password is provided by Newshosting
when you activate your account. Your Sympatico b1 or Business Internet
user id identification and password will not work with our service. To
activate your Newshosting account, click here.

Most of the other free news servers also require login/registration such
as eternal-september, while aioe does not.

http://www.eternal-september.org/ news.eternal-september.org provides
free read and write access to all text newsgroups. It requires a
registration that can be done online. Please read the terms of use
before you register.

http://www.aioe.org/ Aioe.org hosts a public news server, an USENET site
that is intentionally kept open for all IP addresses without requiring
any kind of authentication both for reading and posting.

I recommend the e-s registration and usage over aioe. I don't know
anything about sympatico/bell's free vs paid newshosting arrangements.

e-s does a reasonable job of spamfiltering and news admin for a free
provider. NIN news.individual.net is a little better and/but it costs 10
euros a year.

When you have reg'd and obtained a user/pass, you configure your news
account in your Vista Tb 3.1.10 at Tools/ Account settings/ (select your
news server's Server Settings in the left pane) right pane server
settings check 'always request authentication when connecting to this
server'

Then, the first time you access the news server (with such an
authentication setting checked), the password manager wizard will
request the user and then the pass from you and on each request you can
check to have Tbird remember the user/ass.
