Thunderbird, in my opinion, is an email client that happens to also be
capable of reading NNTP newsgroups. It is not a full-fledged real
newsreader, thus lacks features that many desire. It doesn't have very
good filtering capabilities, and will not mark cross-posted messages as
read in the second group.

Seems you accepted the "last 500 posts" in a dialog box. To get older
ones, see the Account Settings for the news server, under "Server
Settings"m for the option "Ask me before downloading more than [ nnn]
messages". Unsubscribe, then resubscribe to the group and change the
number to something higher, say "3000" or whatever.
