All incremental updates to Thunderbird have failed for me, and even the
then initiated full download never works. With Firefox I have never had
these problems.

Environment: Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit

Any ideas?

Just download the full install .exe file, and install that. That
usually fixes the update problem as well.

I should have mentioned that I always have done a full install then. But
this hasn't fixed the problem.

You might have some old files that are getting in the way. Search for
'updates' in your profile. If you find any files in a directory like
that, just delete them.

User account/App Data/Roaming/ nuke the Thunderbird folder. Try a full
install again.

That would erase the profile with all accounts, settings, and emails.
It's a bad recommendation, unless anyone wants to start from scratch,
and has a full backup.

Foe Win7 and Vista there is a folder 'updates' under
C:\Users\<user_name>\AppData\Local\Thunderbird\Mozilla Thunderbird
This one can be safely deleted, which may fix problems with incremental
updates.

So, would a complete reformat, and reinstall OS, and reinstall TB, but I
wouldn't EVER suggest that without trying everything else possible
before suggesting ANYTHING that might cause the user to lose data.

Thank you to all the suggestions here. Updates now work again after
having tried/done the following:

(a)
- removed c:\Users\<name>\AppData\Local\Thunderbird
- de-installed Thunderbird
- installed Thunderbird 8.0
==> the update (to 9.0.1.) still does not work

The error message (original in German) was: "Update failed. The
incremental update for Thunderbird could not be installed. For a new try
the complete update-package will be downloaded now." As this had also
failed previously I did not further test this.

(b)
- removed c:\Users\<name>\AppData\Local\Thunderbird
- removed c:\Users\<name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird
- de-installed Thunderbird
- installed Thunderbird 8.0
- put back c:\Users\<name>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird
(after having deleted the just created profile directory)
==> now the update to 9.0.1. works

This positive result astonished me, because I had assumed that the cause
of the problem would be somewhere in the profile directory, as (a) had
not cured the problem.

In the application directory, have a look within the updates folder,
there should be a last-update.log which may give some pointers to what
is going on.

If not, and it persists, please file a bug so that we can investigate
the issue - attaching the last-update.log would be useful in that case.

same OS as op win 7 pro 64bit , similar issue all incremental updates
fail with pop up on screen that says
"The update could not be installed. Please make sure there are no
other copies of Thunderbird running on your computer, and then restart

in the update.log i can see :

there is a simple solution to this.
go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox

rename firefox.exe to afirefox.exe
double click afirefox.exe, it will invoke firefox, create a new
firefox.exe and everything seems to work from there !

delete afirefox.exe

Just today, I get the same error message (as I always do), whilst

For me, TB updates always work,
but must be launched from privileged Windows account.

It is a pity,
because I run it from limited account by purpose,
even if I have access to privileged one.

More handy would be if it would trigger privileged credential request.

computers worked, *and* stored their data somewhere other than C:\

1) Start task manager
2) Go to services tab
3) Click on "Services..."
4) Look for "Application Experience"
5) Set it back to "automatic" (you probably disabled it wanting to tweak windows)
6) Retry to update
7) Enjoy :)
