TB v 2.0.0.23 WIN7 64 bit

A unwanted news account called "news" has appeared in TB.

Deleting it in "Account options" works until TB is restarted, when it
reappears.

Any ideas?

This works for me.

Delete the news account from the View Account settings

Close Thunderbird and

Find the profile where the newsgroup was created. Usually it is

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application
Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\024z9jth.default

Delete

news.msf
news.rc
and the subdirectory News.

( there may be multiple news1, news2, etc.

Be careful not to delete the main news/newsgroups directory. This will
have the name of each newsgroup or email account you have.

It is my understanding these news accounts are created when you
accidentally try to access an invalid newsgroup from Thunderbird or from
Firefox..

I know this post is > 4 years old. Anyhow, I came across via Google's search. There is a way in Thunderbird:
-Go to the "Account Settings" dialogue
-Select the news account you want to remove in the navigation bar on the left
-Chose "Account Actions" dropdown at the bottom
-Remove account

That's it.
