Hi,

To have a properly threaded view in newsgroups (or in email if using the
same folder for incoming and outgoing), what is the proper View setting?

Right now, I have View|Sort By|Order Received|Threaded (this setting I
believe was the default setting).

I am wondering if it would not be more correct to have View|Sort
By|*Subject*|Threaded.

However, I have tried to switch back and forth but did not notice any
difference, perhaps because "threaded" takes priority over the Subject,
Order Received, etc.?

(Just a guess)
Message sorting and Threading are two different thing.
Messages are shown in threaded view depending on 'In-Reply-To:' in the
their message header.
Now sorting determines how those 'Threads' will be displayed, more
simply , message under thread will remain intact but thread position in
message list pane will depend on sorting type .

Nir, I'm not sure I'm getting this.
You are saying that using either sorting by subject or order received
(as described in original post) will *not* affect threading but only the
position of the thread in the pane?
Is that correct?

( As far I know ) yes.
Threading depends only on 'In-Reply-To:'
Sorting of thread in message list pane depends only on the setting that
user has chosen at View > Sort

Please note that there are some bugs exist ( as far I can remember some
one has reported it in a reply in a thread ) that in threading mechanism
