Someone calls and asks if I got that email they sent. "No," I say, "it's
not here."
Several hours later I'm searching for an email (a global search would be
nice, by the way) and the status bar in the search window says,
"building index for _____" and there, in my folder pane are the missing
messages going back a couple of days. In this case they were in three
different accounts. I compact folders on a regular basis. I empty the
trash. I do all the manual things I shouldn't have to do but have been
told I must do in order to prevent this from happening.
I have to admit this hasn't happened in a couple of months which made me
think the problem was resolved. But it sure is annoying.

Hi Jeff,
Not sure what you mean by "shouldn't have to do". I have been using TB
since it's pre-release stage (0.4?) and I've never experienced that
issue. Of course I try to keep my main folders clean by moving saved
mail out of the main folders (my Inbox is currently at 869k). Maybe
that's why I've never had an issue, but can't say it's because of that
in particular.

For a while, this was a nagging and persistent problem and nothing
seemed to fix it. Then it worked for about 6 weeks until the day before
yesterday. At least this time it was only a day's worth of mail in one
folder.
In order to keep things happy every couple of days I'll run a search on
some random word in the body of messages and what happens is that the
status bar will say, "building index for..." and it's then that these
messages show up. I hadn't done one of those in about a week...
So, TB isn't automatically keeping the indexes up even when new email
comes in. Like I said, it's not all the time, just every once in a
while. But when it happens, it can be critical.

Does the same thing happen in TB Safe Mode? Have you tested a new
profile with maybe just one account? Did you try leaning out the main
folders to see if that helps?

Terry, I always catch grief for what I'm about to say but I'm going to
say it anyway...
All I want to do is use the application "out of the box" and use it
reliably, with known expectations. I don't want to have to fool with it
and tweak and tune it. The days when I had the patience for that was a
long time ago.
With that said, The only thing that keeps things running smoothly is if
I run a global search every day so that the indexes that do not get
updated automatically when new mail comes in, *do* get rebuilt. I don't
know why it happens, but they somehow get "stuck". A search unsticks
them... if any of that makes sense. Now if there was a true global
search, not just across folders but across separate accounts... now,
that would be sweet.
Like I said, it's a minor annoyance but one still the same.

Jeff,
I understand your frustration, but my three suggestions were for
troubleshooting purposes. Maybe you've tried all of them, but you didn't
state so, so I'm guessing the answer is no. You're willing to use the
search function to get it to work. My suggestions are making an attempt
at that also. If you don't want to try ways to resolve it, you'll
*have* to live with it. Maybe nothing will fix it, and if so, you'd be
better off using a different client. But your issue isn't common AFAIK,
so we have to look at what is different on your system that others don't
have. And we start by first using Safe Mode, then creating a new profile.

I'm working in safe mode as I write.
