Emacs external editor for Tbird

Has any of you successfully gotten emacsclientw.exe to work with Tbird.
I set exteditor.default.editor to C:\emacs\bin\emacsclientw.exe -n "%1"
in about.config but when I call the external editor from within Tbird
another instance of Emacs is opened rather than the server. Does an
association have to be made with .eml suffix or is something else going
on with the windows registry? (This is on win2000).
