(Sorry if I misposted this in any way).
System - P4 2.8 GHz/2 GB RAM
OS: XP Pro SP2
I was wondering if anyone has seen/has a clue about this weird
problem I've been having... It started... years ago... I honestly
don't remember what versions of the apps, but at least FF2 and
Thunderbird 1.5.
Basically, after a while of running (I leave both running pretty much
from the start of my computer until I shut it down - roughly 2-4
months in between), FF and Thunderbird seem to automatically "switch"
my keyboard layout and think I'm typing with what looks like a Great
Britain keyboard layout as opposed to a US keyboard layout. I know
it's not windows because I can use Word, notepad, or just about
anything else and the keyboard responds normally. For example, the
next line will contain punctuation and symbols typed in notepad:
~!@#$%^&*()<>?:"{}_+
The following line was typed in the message using Mozilla Thunderbird
2.0.14 (to be updated next time I reboot).
ャ!"」$%^&*()<>?:@{}_+
As you can see, I have a British Pound symbol, The @ symbol is now
where the " symbol is and vice versa and I don't have a tilde
character available to me.
You probably have multiple keyboard settings, one of which is wrong.
In Windows you can switch between them by pressing Left Alt+Shift.
You can remove the wrong british layout by going to Windows Control
Panel -> (Category Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options) Regional
and Language Settings -> Languages -> Text Services and Input Languages
-> Details.
You have to first change the active layout to the correct one and apply
it before you can remove a wrong keyboard layout.
I don't know why it only switches for Mozilla applications though, but
hope this helps anyway.

I have no idea how your keyboard layout gets changed, but I do have some
advice. DON'T leave applications running for very long periods of time.
Memory management is Windows is not perfect, and neither is memory
management in Firefox and Thunderbird. Over time, ram can become
seriously fragmented, and Windows may not be able to recover all the
memory blocks.
Second, there is no way you can leave an application running for 2-4
months and be properly updating your computer with the Windows Update
patches that appear on the second Tuesday of each month. DON'T SKIP
THESE. Visit the Windows Update site and apply all the current patches,
or the SP3 update and see if your problem improves. Also, get in the
habit of clearing all running applications at least once a day to allow
Windows to clean up the RAM. I suspect you will never see this problem
again if you do both.

I have the same problem...firefox seems to "forget" that I am not
using a UK keyboard, even though my language is en/gb.
This is not affecting any other applications in widnows, and the
"windows language bar" is set correctly to language english, and
keyboard portuguese.
This is a really annoying problem, anyone know what might cause it____?
US keyboard top row all with Shift key ~!@#$%^&*()_+
This is for those who do not want to make a choice. (Windows systems)
Control Panel, Regional Language Options, Keyboard (tab)
Text Services and Input Languages
General Tab==
English (United States) - US
Keyboard
US (and remove other choices, or add another language)
Language Bar==
hidden, and uncheck the other items showing languages in taskbar
Advanced Key settings TAB==
should now have only US so no keyboard shortcut to change
BONUS: Sound warnings for accidentally hitting Caps Lock, Num lock, Scroll Lock
Control Panel, Ease of Access Center: [Shortcut WinKey+U, then choose keyboard]
Make the keyboard easier to use: [x] Turn on Toggle keys (sound for Caps/Num/Scroll lock)

HTH,
David McRitchie, extensions I use are briefly documented on my site
Firefox Custom: http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/firefox.htm
I turn off the language bar... but when I temporarily turn it back on
to review settings, all are set correctly.

I do perform updates... maybe not on every patch Tuesday, but they
are done.

Ok well I'm on Vista so Control Panel may be a little different from XP.
I tried looking in Help for "change keyboard" and I didn't like the choices
I saw for those I'd been to.
I'm guessing you use 'alt-tab' a lot?
At work I'm the only one using and Azerty layout and alt-tab.
One other person also uses Azerty, but doesn't use alt-tab.
Our operational program (name is unimportant and you'll prly not know
it) is in a remote Citrix environment.
But sometimes, randomly, when I switch to windows with alt-tab (and
usually in the afternoon) my keyboard changes automatically to Qwerty,
to my enormous annoyment...
The entire Citrix environment is still in Azerty, only the operational
program we use is in Qwerty.
I partly found out that the problem is using alt-something but I don't
have any details.
Hope this helps detecting the problem more clearly.
