The first is when I send email with attachments. The attachments seem
to be incorporated into the outgoing email and take space in the
mailbox file. If I "detach" them, I have to overwrite the file. I'm
reluctant to overwrite in case I overwrite the wrong file. So question
is, how to detach a file I've sent without overwriting a file on my
computer? Is delete the only option for saving space?
PS. ideally, when attaching files, I'd like Tbird to not actually
attach the file to the message, but reference it and send it. Eudora
(pre-Penelope did this fine).
Second instance. When I receive embedded (inline?) pictures in a
message, I can't find a way to detach the picture to both save space
and to save the picture for other use. So how to deal with inline
pictures to detach to both save space and to reuse the picture. There
are no attachments on those messages with embedded pictures.
I'm using Eudora 8.0.0.b1 (TBird with Penelope 0.1a21 extension) and
new to the Tbird paradigm of email.
thanks,
-Tony
You need to install an add-on to add that funtion; in
its native state, TB encodes attachements within the
message.
Poke around here:

Hi Chris,
Thanks, I've installed "Attachment Extractor" and will test it out
some more.
I'd still like a process to delete images that I embed (correct
term?) into emails (by copy and paste). So my sent mails still occupy
file space by having the image embedded. Embedding the images makes it
easier for recipients to see the pictures as it's inline with captions
and the don't have to click on an attachment to open it.

View --> Message Body As --> Plain Text
This will cause the embedded images to be listed as attachments, and
you should then be able to delete them.

Agreed. I too prefer to send images that way.

You'll still have to dig around for an add-on. TB is designed to
encoded all attachements into the message body, and there is no
way to change that without using an extension or add-on. A
google search might turn up something.
