I find it annoying that TB allows me to delete emails
(when in the folder view) by pressing the DELETE or BACKSPACE key.
Sometimes I accidentally press that while reading mail
(in the preview pane) thinking that I had a compose window open to reply
and attempting to edit. That deletes the email (and I have to look for
it in Trash and move it back).

I'd rather that deletion of email can *only* be effected by
explicit mouse action, not a single key.
Is there a setting for this?

Thunderbird does not actually delete the email until you compact the
folder. To recover deleted emails press Ctrl + Z (press them at the same
time0. Once you compact the folder you will have to look for it it
trash. The search feature works very well BTW

Not that I know of.

Can the OP use the keyconfig addon to remap the delete message action?
I've never tried to use it in this way, but it may be worth looking into.
