In Outlook Express, I was able to create a custom view that would
display only watched threads AND any unread messages.

So far, I have not succeeded in discovering how to do something similar
in T-Bird.

Is this possible?

No. It appears you are limited to the four built-in views: All, Unread,
Threads with Unread, and Watched Threads with Unread.

I'd love to be proved wrong about this. I was dearly hoping views would
be improved in Thunderbird 3.

You can set up search folders to mimic some view configurations, but
watched threads are still not a property you can use to build these.

Click in the star colum next to the item you want to watch. The next
time you open the incoming mail, click on the star at the upper left.
That will clump the star items at the top, so you can see them. CTRL N
will allow you to scroll through the thread. I've been using this
workaround for a long time!

Thanks to both you and David for the replies. I have a view that shows
starred and unread items ... The part that makes me grumble is that it
does not appear to be possible to star a thread. At any rate, it sounds
like we have all found basically the same work-around.
