I'm currently using thunderbird v1.5.0.4 on linux (Kubuntu Dapper). I
use an IMAP connection to check my email. Here's the problem I'm facing:
when I delete emails locally on thunderbird, they are permanently
deleted locally. But on the remote server, they are only marked to be
deleted. They are only expunged when I close thunderbird. Is there some
setting I can use to expunge emails immediately (as soon as I delete
them locally) on the remote server as well?
Thanks,

Expunging is expensive so most IMAP clients, including the
Mozilla-based IMAP clients, wait and do expunges at the end of a
session. If you want to expunge immediately, you need to do it by
hand, e.g., in SeaMonkey Suite right click on the mailbox name
and choose "Compact this folder". I've written about this here:
The IMAP Way of Deleting a Message

I don't know of any IMAP client that can be set up to expunge
immediately, but I'm curious to learn if such an IMAP client
exists.
