Same curiotity: my only "search engine" in TB is the "serach message"
tool box. I think you have an extension disturbing you installation...

My TB's default search engine is Google.

I did nothing except install the "English (British)" version of Thunderbird.

ixing this is easy:
Find you Thunderbird profile directory using the instructions here: https://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/Profiles#w_where-is-my-profile-stored
Open the actual profile folder "xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.default" and create a folder named "searchplugins".
Close Thunderbird.
Now go to where Firefox is installed (if you have fFF installed) and open the searchplugins directory within. Copy the file named google.xml and paste it into the same directory you created in the Thunderbird profile.
Run Thunderbird again.
Highlight a word in an email and search bing with it. You'll now see the G icon along the left in the list of search engines. Click it and the search will change to Google.
Click the heart in the lower left and Google will become the default search engine.

Viola!

Please share this anywhere you see others having this problem. It's an easy fix, and it's stupid that it's even an issue to find this solution.

thank you! This worked (sort of).

I had to sudo to root and get the xml from /Applications/.... instead of my local Library directory.

Just curious, why does a EMAIL client even need a search engine. When I am running a search in Thunderbird, I want it to search the messages in my message folders, not the web. Searching the web I do using Firefox.

In the upper right hand corner there is a field where you can either
search the web using Bing or search for messages.

It is the toolbar that has Get Mail, Write, Chat, and the Address Book,
and whatever a user adds to it. I think Tag is also there by default.

No, I have very few add-ons and a search field is not one of them. Maybe
it's because you are using XP and I'm using Win 7.

I had Mail Toolbar unchecked. Tried checking it (though everything there is
redundant and just takes up precious vertical space).

Okay, I have tabs & Mail Toolbar. Tried "Customize..." in the context menu.
Sorry, still no "Search" function. Giving up.

It will give you search results but when you click on a result, FF opens
it up, at least on my machine. I never use it.

Well you don't need tabs. You can select Customize... from the Menu Bar.
Still sad that you don't see "Global Search" in the Customize... window.

Actually Global Search is a default item in the Mail Toolbar, and should
be visible, but you don't use that toolbar, and that is probably why you
don't see it in the customize window.

I had enabled Mail Toolbar just for this - you must have missed that. I see the
choices in <http://imgur.com/9MCakWQ>, but "Global Search" is not one of them.
There is no search, global or otherwise. For this test, I updated from version
17.0.5 to 17.0.6.

May be you're looking at a different picture, but in the screenshot you

If you enabled the Mail Toolbar you should have had a search box with
the contents "Search... <Ctrl+K>" . That would be the global search box.
If you see this box it won't appear in the customize list because it is
already in a menu. If you open up the Customise toolbar screen and then
drag the search box mentioned above back into customize toolbar window
it should appear as "global search".

If you're curious about why there are hooks for a search engine at all,
rather than why the default is Bing, the reason is that it can be pretty
useful to be able to select some text in an email and search for it,
e.g. if there's a term you're not familiar with.

If you'd rather the search open in your web browser instead of
Thunderbird, just set mail.websearch.open_externally to true in the
config editor.

What does "Config Editor" have for browser.search.defaultenginename?

What do you have in the context menu for "Search (Bing, Yahoo, or some
other engine, default is Bing) for:" when you highlight a term in an

"Bing". How it got that way, I have no idea.

As I said back about 5 levels of this thread: "Bing".

Look, I don't see much purpose to this. I wouldn't use "Global Search" even if
I had it. If there's anything that's significant here, it's to illustrate
using, bright colors, how out of control TBird is.

I got into this thread merely to inform that version 17.0.5 (and 17.0.6) for
Windows doesn't have "Global Search". I began by asking how I could find it,
then I posted that it isn't there.

OK, I activated Global Search via

and the "Ctrl-K" now appears. However, it returns no results! (I
searched for garcia, a sure thing, I thought.)

Aha! The old "corrupted global-messages-db.sqlite" file!!!

Deleted it, restarted it and all is well!

Basically, It has to be enabled first.

My sincerest "Thanks!" to all who helped. It makes my heart warm.

Mark.

This worked perfectly! Thanks Mark! Now I can highlight a phrase and Right Click/search and Google comes up instead of Bing!

How to Install in Thunderbird
Download and save the file (Google Search for Thunderbird 1.0) to your hard disk.
In Mozilla Thunderbird, open Add-ons from the Tools menu.
From the options button next to the add-on search field, select "Install Add-on From File..." and locate the downloaded add-on.

When a product refers searches to external search providers,
the chosen search provider gets an opportunity to present
its own advertisers' content to the user and also to collect data,
and for this, search providers may pay a little bit back
to the referrer for the referral.

Need any auto repairs? Let's see, which shops pay me the most
to refer potential customers to them? Thus far, however,
none of them pays me to slash anyone's tires :)

I am sure you could find some that would be perfectly willing to do
that. However, I think using Bing is a pretty bad idea. I find it
rather annoyingly child-oriented.
