Well the previous Thunderbird version to 38 was 31, so it still follows
the Firefox ESR version numbering scheme and has since version 17.0. 17

The better explanation is these numbers are actually minor numbers. They
are all 1.38, 1.31, 1.24..... I believe you can understand. :)

Well, the installation file is named "Thunderbird Setup 38.5.0.exe".
Are you saying it's really 45.0 with a wrong name?

I see that other people notice the same thing:

So, the question is, is anybody here really getting the version from

I see the following two problems, both of which caused me to revert to

1. The changes implemented by bug #36489 were made the default. This
wiped out the "From" columns in some of my E-mail folders and the
"Recipient" columns in the rest of my E-mail folders. To restore the
columns I wanted I would have to manually change each of 40+ folders.

2. Buttons on both the main Thunderbird window and the compose window
were hosed. On the main window, the same VERY FUZZY icons appeared for

Testing Thunderbird 45.0 in Safe Mode, I do not see the button problem.
Thus, the problem is caused by either the NoGlass theme or one of the
extensions I have. However, I very much prefer to have the NoGlass
theme and all of my extensions.

It appears that Thunderbird 45.0 is not compatible with one or more
extensions that worked quite well with Thunderbird 38.7.2.

45 is absolutely being served on all Mozilla web pages. So if you are
getting 38.5.0 you are being served a crazy-old stale web page. 38.5.0
shipped many months ago.

Force reload the page.
And if that doesn't help, exercise patience.

I let it be for a few hours and just tried again, and ver. 45 is now
served to me by that page. Maybe it was an old cached page, although I
refreshed it a few times. Anyway, all is copacetic. Still, I'll wait
until it's updatable from within the program.

Thanks, all.

By disabling all extensions and the NoGlass theme and then selectively
re-enabling them, I isolated the button problem to the NoGlass 0.10
theme. The developer of that theme supplied mw with a NoGlass 0.11,
which corrected the problem; so I have installed Thunderbird 45.0 and
NoGlass 0.11.

NoGlass 0.11 should be available at addons.mozilla.org soon.

In the meantime, I will be manually changing "Correspondents" to "From"
or "Recipient" in most of my E-mail folders. :(

I use many different e-mail addresses.
Having a column "From" and a column "Recipient" is much more convenient
than only one with "Correspondents".

It's bad practise that the upgrade changes the columns settings.

To change many or all folders at once, use the
"Apply colums to..." -> "Folders and its children..." in the drop down
menu "Select colums to display"

I consider the little arrows in the "Correspondents" column --

Ah, but if you file messages and their replies all together in one
topic-specific folder in order to preserve the complete conversation,
you'd need both from: and to: columns to understand each message's
context. "Correspondents" is perfect; I don't need to be told that I was
either the sender or recipient of each and every message. In this case,
the little arrows are less wasteful of space than having both from: and
to: columns.

I don't understand why anyone would want to store the original message
and its repl(y|ies) in different folders. Messages worth keeping are
filed into relevant folders; I aim to keep the Inbox, Sent, Trash and
Junk folders empty.

Besides Trash and Sent, I have about 40 other subject-oriented folders
where I save E-mail. I configure the folders to show threads. The
marking for threads helps me to understand the sequence of who sent
what. I really do not need "Correspondents" for that.

With the "Correspondents" column:
In Inbox (and Trash) I do see the sender.
In Sent I do see the recipient.
In other words, I do see exactly the same as before with the dedicated
"From" and "To" columns.
Except the little arrow which I completely ignore, as I don't expect to
see the recipient (me) in Inbox, and the sender (me) in Sent.
When filing messages I do keep received and sent messages separate, so
there's no change.

I'm really struggling to understand what the fuzz with "Correspondents"

I tried to update 4 different computers from within Tbird today. Two of
them, both Win7-32 systems, were offered version 45 and were updated.
Two others, running Win7-64 and the other running XP were not offered
the update. I guess they roll these things out in stages, though I
wonder how they determine who gets the update when.

I use many different email addresses for different recipients.
I like to see not only to whom I have sent the email, but also which
email "from" address I have used to send it to.
Therefore I need both "From" and "Recipient" in my (many) email folders.

Anyone can choose the columns as they desire. But what irritates me, is
that the columns were changed after updating to the new version without
a choice.
